Prep for Trunk / Hood Panel Foam Padding

Ok, Lola is finally home from paint and I have been opening boxes of parts I have bought over the years. One of them is foam padding for the underside of the hood and trunk.


My question is do I need to scuff up the surface for the 3M spray adhesive to improve the adhesion, or just spray and attach?


Given that the Lurch-search is self explanatory, I thought that this would be quicker.  More questions for follow.

Regardless, no need to scuff just clean with something solvent to ensure no grease or surface contaminant (Wax and Grease Remover is what I would use. 


If you are gluing yourself then follow the instructions on the glue exactly. I am guessing you will need to apply to both surfaces and allow to get tacky. This can be a bit tricky if the torsion bar is still in place.


One technique you can try to get it aligned is to put the two together while wet, slide around to get aligned and the pull apart nearly all the way and leave it to dangle by a strip about 2" wide at the top.  It stays like this while the glue gets tacky on both sides. When tacky it can then be smoothed into position and should stick well. 


This will vary in practicality depending upon glue used, size and shape of insulation so your mileage may vary here. 


Chris may be right about the aesthetics of the hood pad (I don't have one) but one thing it does help with is condensation forming inside against the cold single skin surface. This then runs down the skin into the folded seam on the outside which is why they typically rust out. If the pads had been applied from new by BMW, perhaps there would be less rusty deck lids?

This is actually a debated point -- in circles, of course, where such minutiae matter!  Some people, such as I, believe the two smaller hood pads were installed on the left side and center of the hood, with the larger pad being installed on the right side.  This is certainly how my '76 came from the factory.  The first 4 photos show the hood pads in 1983.  The last photo shows the hood in 2012, after the pads turned to dust.  The old glue was left, however, to tell the same tale...

Ah ha!!! Steve, you always have the answers!


Your under hood pic is similar to mine just before I painted to match the resprayed blue exterior. 



The foam from Blunt has super sticky adhesive, so once it went on, there was no taking it off without destroying it. Fortunately, dark blue and black foam it's hard to see the minutiae :ph34r:
