'72 v '76 body panel compatibility

Hi all-so here's my first tech question. I'm going to be restoring a '76. I need both front fenders, and both doors-the ones on this guy are shot. I'm also going to need some trim pieces, and i wouldn't mind having the stock seats and rims, but it's got pretty nice aftermarket seats, and some pretty (13"?) momos on it now, which look VERY sharp. so it's really the body panels and trim pieces i need.

 

i've got a line on a '72 donor car. the undercarriage is toast, and the rear body panels are bondo-ed to hell, but it technically is a complete car, with halfway decent front fenders and doors. non-running, engine is apart at the moment, but all there. i can get the car for cheap. it'd give me basically spare anything i wanted to scavenge off it(glass, engine, solex carb, etc etc), but it'd be some work. plus, it's local. no shipping doors, which i like. i know the fenders are available for $130 a pop. 

 

with the body panels interchange? should i jump on this, even if i have to run the carcass up to a junkyard? thanks for the advice!

The doors can be used, but keep in mind the 74+ doors are heavier and have more side impact protection.  So, you'd be giving up a little safety, but losing some weight.  Also, the fenders can work (recently did such a swap on mine).  But, they are a little different at the bottom where they meet the rocker trim piece.  It's just bent a little differ   I just didn't worry about it lookin a bit off, and the rocker trim mostly covers it up.

im not sure about the rest of stuff, but you'll find a few little differences.  Some of the earlier cars have clear glass, while most later ones have a slight green tint, so keep that in mind if you're looking to get glass from it.

Also, doubt a spare solex carb would help much.  Hardly anybody ever uses them.  Most everybody has a Weber 32/36, 38/38, or  dual 40s.  I'm not sure why the solexes just don't get used, but hardly anybody wants them.

As for a spare rebuildable block and head, that can be worthwhile if you need.  Especially for those of us in Ohio, that stuff can be hard to find and hard to ship.  I do have a spare bare E12 head here in Athens if you want it too, though.

A '72 will have tinted glass, just like your '76.  The clear glass was only used on the 68 to sometime in late 70 or early '71.  

 

If the parts car is an early '72, it'll have a one barrel Solex carb--worth scrounging as swapping/selling material so someone who needs it.  Same with the roundie-unique bits, like the metal grilles, tail lights, rear body panel trim etc.  

 

I'd say go for the parts car if it's cheap.

I have a set of seats. Full interior. They're blue from a fjord. The front seats would need to be recovered but the rears are in good shape. All function. I just put e24 seats in the rear and e21 recaros up front or id be using them still. Send me a pm if interested.

Maybe because of this:

A pressure limitation valve for the acceleration pump. Has jumped out of its place for unknown reason, and that's just one of the many issues with these §%&!/$(&%$ kind of carbs.
