How many holes should there be?

Im going to fill in every small sheet metal hole in the trans tunnel. There are a few large holes which I assume are supposed to be there. Any other holes I should leave?

Also, should these dents be banged out towards the under carraige or towards the cabin? Im assuming they were made during the 5 speed install. If I bang them out will the 5 speed bell housing not fit?

You need the big one ;)

 

The trick is to think about what is screwed into where. Really shouldn't be that many screw holes in the tunnel.

 

Failing that, weld up all of the holes for self tapping screws and start again. By the time you have rebuilt your console and changed mounting methods etc you are likely to want new mounting holes anyway (like the previous dozen attempts to reinstall the console).

I've never had to clearance the top of the tunnel for a 5- speed- I dunno what they were doing there.

 

The 5- speed 'pudge' is in the footwell, pretty close to the accelerator, for the slave cylinder.  And can be

added with an appropriate lever once the transmission is in...

If you have a short console, there's one hole in the tunnel ahead of the shift lever opening that locates the rear portion of the console and keeps it wedged against the dash.  My car has A/C so don't know exactly how the long console is fastened to the tunnel, but you picture seems to show an excessive number of screw holes.  Perhaps your car either has A/C or had at one time; that would explain some of the extra holes--especially if it was a Fridgiking.  You can figure out which ones are legit by test fitting the console in place, and marking the screw holes it needs.

There should be one big hole for the shifter, one self-tapped in front of it for the console, one cent-sized to the left for the reverse wires and another self-tapped close to the driving pedal for the noise insulation. A/C cars I don't know.

 

You should try to find the guy who perforated your tunnel with his machine gun and force him to repair it.

Thanks.  I'll try to find other pics to see which way it goes.  I can only imagine the dents should be knocked out towards the undercarriage, but better safe than sorry.

I know where the guy is, but if I use that logic he would be paying for the whole rebuild.

What kinda lever we talkin?  I haven't figured out what to use yet.  I suppose I have a giant crowbar I haven't tried yet.  

 

I've just got a a little tapping when the engine is cold I need to remedy.

I used a bodyworking 'spoon', but really, anything with a bit of an angle to it would work.  

Cat's paw, small prybar, etc.  The

tunnel's pretty soft, and responds well to moderate pressure.
