Kinda depends on the rest of the set up if you are going to use air horns you could just add the length back with them on a street tuned car it's really the overall length of the intake that counts, on a race engine where your trying to build power in a narrow rpm band then the position of the throttle plates to intake valve could come into play. If your just going to go to a air cleaner then you might loose a little bottom end but it would likely be less torque than you'll lose by not running stacks at all

This is true.  When you use the longer manifold many remove the stacks so then you've got A) no difference in overall length compared to a shorter runner with longer stack   B ) No velocity stack at all, so the air just tumbles straight through the carb (this results in a stumble off idle among other things).

 

In short, Justin.  Any perceived detraction is negligible when you look at the bigger picture.
