Nice and clean.

I do like the vintage steering wheel and steel seat vents in the black seats.

Bet it goes nicely too

Congrats again to Lisa and Le and the whole team who worked on your car.  Two years is very quick to re-do an entire car.

Curious to hear your impressions on:

How it drives.  Did you have to chase down any elusive squeaks or noises?

If you can bear to leave it in a grocery store parking lot (and not run to the storefront checking on it every few minutes).

Do the seat ring inserts cause hot spots after the car has been sitting in the sun?

Did you install the roller bearing handbrake upgrade?

How long did it take you to get accustomed to the large diameter (NK?) steering wheel?

How long it takes you to clean the BBS wheels.

Did you upgrade the seat belts?

How do you like the Weber 38/38 carburetor?

Did you save every receipt for all the parts and labor (of course you did - but have you tallied up everything yet?)?

I can only assume you park Tesoro in your garage at all times.

It took me 4 years to "complete" my 69 and it's still not done.

Thank you for the nice comments everyone!

I'm so very pleased with the article and Courtney did an amazing job capturing some wonderful images!

I am especially fond of the part where Courtney writes, "Tesoro is what her dreams look like, embodied in a classic BMW."

I'm glad the story gave a background of myself as I have a lot of history with this particular model car. After owning a couple of 2002s, I knew exactly what I wanted for this build and envisioned Tesoro to be what it is today. A very classic restoration with some modifications but keeping in line with the 2002 "look" and adding some tasteful rare and unique 2002 parts and accessories . I also wanted to keep it "73 correct" with the big horn bumper overriders, and turn signal/wiper relay, also the 2 front vent plates which are some of the key elements of a "73" 2002

I hope you enjoyed reading the article and thanks again for following Tesoro's journey. I'll continually update stories of Tesoro on my blog...

Hi Jim! Thanks for your comment!

I'll be posting my impressions on my blog.... but to answer a few of your questions...

"If you can bear to leave it in a grocery store parking lot (and not run to the storefront checking on it every few minutes)."

- Tesoro is not a grocery getter. ;)

"Do the seat ring inserts cause hot spots after the car has been sitting in the sun?"

- I would think if the car was sitting in the sun, maybe? But that won't happen here.... I have to be extra careful as the seats are all leather with alcantara suede in the inserts and I hear that the alcantara suede can fade over time, plus having a black interior is gonna be HOT in the sun anyways. Note to self, do not drive with short shorts on! LOL!

"Did you install the roller bearing handbrake upgrade?"

-Thank you to Grice for this upgrade! :D

"I can only assume you park Tesoro in your garage at all times."

-Your assumption is correct, with a custom cover of course. ;)

Wow, I am not sure exactly where to begin.

This is an extraordinarily romantic, soulful write up of a BMW 2002 and its owner. The way the cars perfect body work, which is black and the most difficult of all to do correctly, stylishly reinforces our 02 princesses black hair, black leather coat, Black high heel's, perfect silhouette standing above the car overlooking the coast, and casually putting on her lovely driving gloves is  masterful  photography, and first-class quality.  A small portion of the BMW goddess is enigmatically included in the rearview mirror as she puts on her driving gloves, which have the requisite holes cut in the back for knuckles.  I have several pairs of these gloves, which I wear on special occasions when riding cool motorcycles and driving very cool cars. Somehow having the correct Accoutrements adds to the sensual romance of the overall experience.  I think it is kind of like Victoria's Secret for sports car nuts.

I Understand this romantic illness, it is part of my early , nascent sports car obsession. At 16  I was allowed to drive an Austin Healey 100-4 very fast with the windshield folded down, while wearing aircraft goggles, smoking h---, and drinking India pale ale on twisty roads while the leaves were changing in early October.  A friend of the family realized that I was a true sports car lover and nurtured my hopeless romantic infatuation with sports cars in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania in the 1970s.

I had grown up with Racing mini coopers, old BMWs and saabs during the 1960s and early 70s. I remembered my brother spinning out his friends TR three at a high rate of speed with me, age 9, in the passenger seat. At age 17, I limped away from a Moto Guzzi accident which occurred it over 120 miles an hour.

I had, of course, been allowed to drive a VW beetle at age 7.

What I find most delightful about this article, is that this romantic celebration of sports cars, anthropomorphizing them, extends to women as well as men. Lisa's romantic ideal of her 2002 - a beautiful, stylish, high performance,  sensual (I mean really,- recaro seats with AlcanTara leather and grommets allowing ventilation similar to Ford GT 40 race cars from the 1960s) machine of significant capability with luxurious trim- emanates from the car beautifully. I had a nearly identical pairof racing bucket seats made in Italy, to put into my Porsche 914 6 GT, with a 3.6 L twin plug motor.   Unfortunately I destroyed it at famously technical Weatherly Hillclimb racetrack a week before the seats arrived. (1800 pound mid engine cars are not supposed to have 290 hp motors.)

It is been said that every time a person puts pen to paper they reveal the innermost workings of their mind. In a similar Zen like fashion, I believe, Lisa's car is one of the purest expressions of a personal vision in our happy 2002 BMW community. I find it inspiring, and it frees me in a way to celebrate doing things well, with no regrets. Sometimes I feel guilty about spending money on machinery. Lisa's celebration of quality, and the beautiful end result provide A reinforcement of why the world has created great works of art, and provided experiences, be they fantastic food, incredible art, warmly human comraderie, or sensual celebrations of the human condition.

Automobiles provide a freedom, and celebration of the American spirit and ability to explore the wide-open spaces. You could get in your BMW 2002 tomorrow, and drive across the country, much like our own Andrew Wilson. The romance of American freedom, and capability to explore new roads in old romantically involving sports cars all over this country is uniquely intertwined with our own early youthful cultural conditioning. The strange interaction and neural plasticity of the brain, mixed with teenage hormones, and incompletely understood dreams, resurface and R Felt later in life, providing the seed Crystal, the Nidus for a great BMW celebration.

So it is with great,  sincere ,  heartfelt appreciation that I thank you   Lisa   for your tenacity, your attention to detail, and your level of quality. Tesoro is the luckiest of cars .  Harvs colorado 2002 is also incredibly lucky. Your beautiful example/obsession somehow absolves/pardons  my own romantic BMW lunacy. I will feel less guilty when I go to the body shop to make the next bodywork payment on my 2002  .

All my best to my BMW brothers and sisters and their individual expressions of  2002 individuality.

Sincerely, Peter

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
