Wiring help for AEM afr

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Need some basic help with wiring up my newly purchased AEM analog afr.

I searched and could not find an answer to the most basic of questions:

Which interior wires should I tap to connect the analog afr gauge?

They call for connections to

1) 12 V power

2) ground

3) switched 12 V power

4) instrument lights (optional)

Many thanks!!

Vince

How 'bout this?

Oh. Hmm well u need to look for a switched power source. I believe one of the key positions has a lead which is hot during run and start. You might put a meter on those terminals. I believe I went with that for switched.

Also use good grounds. You can run one to the column securing bolts.

Thanks Ray...although you may be overestimating my wiring knowledge.

-Ground is easy enough.

-I guess I'll find a hot lead behind the instrument panel (maybe the one going to lighter?)

-Same approach above for instrument light?

-I guess you are suggesting I dismantle around ignition switch to find 12V switched lead?

Sorry for the basic questions...Thanks for the help

Vince

A search will likely turn up ignition switch position terminals and description. Also the panel lights wiring.

I don't have under dash panels in, so it's pretty easy for me to check the switch positions  ;-) They're been in a box for 10 years now, heh.

The lighter wiring is hot full time. I'm not opposed to tapping off that for a low amp draw. Others may differ.

Someone with more specific first-hand knowledge (and less laziness!) should chime in :D

Cheers,

Ray

I tied the 2 12v power leads together. This (I believe) causes the needle to remain in the last position when powered off.  Check your directions to be sure. IIRC I tapped off the #15 circuit to a terminal block inside the car so I could run the AFR gauge and electric fuel pump.

  • 2 weeks later...

So just to close the loop...

As some did, twisted red and pink wires together from AEM gauge and spliced to purple wire (12V switched) from ignition module. Found a ground under the dash.

Here is where I put the guage... used jgerock's post from long ago as inspiration. No holes in dash, used a custom shroud to hold it in place and angled up slightly for easy viewing.

Reading about 11-12 at idle and 14-15 with throttle. Looks like a have some tii tuning to do to tighten up the range and richen up when under some load.

Thanks again,

Vince
