Clicking/Slop in CV joint

Both my rear CV axles have rotational play in them and they make a click/clunk noise when engine breaking or changing directions. Will rebuilding them fix that? By rebuilding I mean taking apart cleaning repacking and new boots?  I feel like it will not help.... but I want to make sure before I drop some money on these bad boys http://www.iemotorsport.com/bmw/2002-clutch-driveline/02cvjoint.html

The cage that the roller bearings live in can crack or the surfaces wear significantly, causing mis-alignment of the bearings.  Click, click, click.

You will only know once you have taken them apart.  My research produced opinions that said these things last a very long time.  You may be lucky with cleaning and repacking.  It's worth the effort, and quite a rewarding job as they clean up real nice.

Are you sure it couldn't be something else in the driveline making the noise?  If you put it all in a witness line up, you might pick the CVs last for any crime. 


If if the boots are at all cracked or perished you may as well strip and examine.

Grab the halfshaft axle itself and try to twist it.  You'll feel the slop.

Also try sliding it back and forth.  It should slide smoothly a little bit,

and rotate back and forth a tiny bit.  You can tell by feel if they're terrible-




These things fail almost exactly never, unless the boots peel off.  They're under about 1/100th the stress that

a FWD Honda puts on them.

Ok so, I am having a few issues in my drive line:

-I get this howling on decel and light load.....posted before about this.

- I get a click when going from reverse to forward. or when the load on the rear end switches directions. 

I know for a fact that there is some slop  in my cvs so I concluded that that must be related to the clunk/click noise.....it seems ppl have posted saying worn CVs do that. I was also hoping that if I got the CVs sorted it my fix my other howling issue that I have been trying to resolve. 




If I grab the  Diff axles stubs and twist opposite directions (isolating the CVs) I do get a bit of slop and some noise in the dif (its a E21 LSD) I also do get a clunk if I grab both stubs again and this time rotate them the same direction forward and backward. This clunk is for sure in the diff
