probably Meyle

Hmmmm.

I replaced the steering center link and tie rods of my tii a few months ago. I work for a BMW/Porsche repair shop, so I have access to a few different brands. In recent years we have had good success with the Ocap brand for older BMW steering linkage parts, but I went with Meyle because they tend to be OK for very basic suspension parts (their "HD" line of suspension ball joints/bushings/control arms for later BMWs is actually very good, and we regularly install these parts on customer cars) and the price was right.

The "plain" Meyle steering center link studs simply did not fit properly within the bores of the pitman and idler arms, and I also didn't like the quality of the tie rod assemblies. So, I sent them back to my supplier (which was no issue, because we buy a ton of parts from them!).

Next, I tried the "proven" Ocap parts, which fit well and the quality seemed good . . . . except the left side ball joint of the center link had play after 3 months of use! Yes, a Targa California road rally was in there, but any quality part should last for years, even with hard driving!

So, I installed a Moog center link earlier tonight, and we will see how that goes!

I have been in this game for almost a dozen years now, and it is exceedingly difficult to stay on top of which parts are quality and which aren't, up to and including Genuine BMW/Porsche parts from the dealership. Supply chains and factories/manufacturing contracts are constantly shifting, and it is tough for a shop to keep up with it all. We offer a generous warranty (2 years/24K miles) on everything we do, so the parts need to be good!

Anyway, rant over. My limited experience with Walloth & Nesch has been great, however. Their high capacity radiator is a very nice piece for a great price!

  • 1 month later...

Just noticed the tie rod in my NK has developed play at one end - 5 years old about 30,000kms. Fair enough.

This part at walloth is now 89.95€ plus shipping, which seemed excessive. So I check a generic parts supplier (europe) as they still list parts for the 02 and NKs and I've just received a Moog brand tie rod for under 50€ delivered.

How did you get on with this brand Chris?

So far, so good, but of course it has been less than 2 months since I installed the Moog center link, and I haven't been driving my 2002tii much lately (though I did drive up to San Francisco and back right after I installed the part).

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
