engine and drivetrain 1975 Motor Differences

I've been looking into a 2002 for a while and a 1975 has come up for sale that I'm interested in.

 

I've read that there are numerous emissions controls on the '75 that make the engine less desirable.

 

I'm curious, what are those undesirable aspects, how large of a negative impact do they actually make and are any of them reversible (how difficult would that be)?

The smog controls can be removed with no adverse impact unless you live in California. I'm not sure what that cut-off date is but someone will surely pipe up. A far greater impact is RUST

The cut off is '76, unfortunately for me.  But, if you have a '75 or older, you're good to go.

X2. Rust free car is first priority. Smog is easy to remove and opens up that sweet 2 liter lump.

Thanks guys! Looks like desmogging isn't that big of a problem.

 

I've verified floor panels have been patched, rear shock towers look good.

 

Anywhere else specifically to look for rust?

Bottom of doors. water gets into doors past window and can ruin the doors. Spare tire likes to collect water and the underneath of the spare tire can be a disaster as well.

If the floors are already repaired, what else might be lurking. Keep in mind however that the floors can rust from a leaky heater core in an otherwise rust free car. 

 

Have you you done the magnet test of the sheet metal to see where there is body filler?

That's a real good point - floor replacements have been welded in and heater is weak evidently. Will definitely investigate and likely plan to replace heater core.
