My friend has a Baur (targa). Well replica. Well, parts car car

What an exciting day. I went and visited my friend. Turns out he has 3 cars he bought for parts.

As the title states, first one is a replicated targa from Massachusetts . I believe he said it was a 74. It was brought to Hawaii, got rear ended, and sent into the front car, so total loss. The Baur part is all there and undamaged. I never thought I would see one of these in person, as the Big Island is basically small town. But mammy oh man, what a thrill. I wanted it for my own.

The parts where the po welded the original targa and his plain (?) 02 together are visible from the inside. I'm thinking this has value to someone, but I have no idea on how much. I would be willing to cut the parts off, and palletize, but shipping would be crazy from here(4 - 600?). Question here is on value if any. Or, do I take the parts - side glass, hinges, top, rear curtain, etc - and sell them piecemeal.

There is no way either of us has time to build one of these. I realize this should be in the classified section, and it will be as soon as it's figured out. my cut is a complete 5 speed conversion for my granatrot, so I have my fee, just hate to see this rot away.

I will be posting parts from the 76 auto with a Behr A/C unit, and a rotten, motorless roundie Tii.

Thanks in advance for any input.

In my opinion, those Baur parts are in very short supply and absolutely should be put into play with the bimmer community.

That is of course to say don't get overly optimistic and price the stuff as if it's made out of gold.

Would be nice to see someone convert the whole assembly back onto a driving chassis. That's what I would do given the parts.

But what do I know

Agreed that it makes the most sense to try to take these parts and get them put back into a full running-car situation. But even that will be tricky considering the more raked windshield, rocker reinforcement to compensate for the amount of body flex, etc. I'm curious if the former owner had equipped the car with the roof drainage buckets, the hardshell clips in the trunk, slightly lowered front seats, and all the other elements that are unique to the Baur Targa.

Thanks for posting. Fascinating story. Any idea what the original VIN was on this car? Hope it gets rolling again in some form.

Hi,

that red targa was brought in by me and a friend in 1985.

we legalized it and drove it untill May of 1988 when my

friend died in a bicycle accident. then i was trying to buy the

car but his nephew wanted it. so the car went to Massachusetts

and sat for 3 years. then the swap was done onto a donor body.

i tried to get the car when the nephew got tired of it but it was

sold while i was waiting for a chance to go pick it up. up to

now i had not heard anything about the car.

i have two targas. one is wrecked and needs the upper part,

and the other needs a floor pan. that was a great car back then.

i would be interested in the majority of the car if we can come

to an agreement on price and i can get it shipped. please contact

me so i can keep the parts alive on two other targas. i have

a picture of it from the funeral i drove it to, back in 1988.

thanks

for the update,

Thank you for the extra things to look for. I was in awe just seeing this car. I have no idea what to look for. I don't know the original vin on this, but perhaps stone does.

Thank you Stone. What a great story. History is a major part of these cars. The front is cut off halfway thru the fenders. I will send you a PM, and, let the possessor of it know what's up. Hopefully this can be on the road one day.

Looking forward to more 02's here.

Saddle road is not what it used to be. They are darn near done with the straightening. It used to be an award winning road with all it's off bank turns. I loved that road when I drove these cars in the 80's. There are still a few stretches of the original left, but not as many miles.

Anyway, keep in touch, and we now return you to our regularly scheduled thread.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
