Hi 202NiK,

As a fellow newbie that only recently became a proud 02 owner after about a year of searching and educating myself I have some advise for you in your search.

When I first decided that i wanted to buy one of these cars I, like you, found my way to this forum. I realized quickly that place is a DIY forum, and this includes "Do your own research" and ask educated questions. What i mean by that is that the questions that will get answers will need some specificity to them. There are some 02 ninja on this forum and the 02-force is strong with them and they are all very helpful, in fact i would say that they are overwhelmingly helpful. However, to elicit this help you may want to exhibit an effort on your part as well.

The one thing i found helpful was going through the older classified and reading through what some of the vets on here had to say about them... For example, when i joined i read the term "firewall notch" and "snorkel nose" a lot but didn't know that it was, but i learned that it was something to look for. I then searched the forum until i got the answers... in that search i learned a great deal more as well... i.e. not only what/where they are but also why they are important.

The simple way would have been to just post a thread " What is a firewall notch?" But would have been lazy and i would not have come across more interesting things about what makes these cars special and waste of time... Also someone had posted a " What is a firewall notch?" about 10 years ago which i found :)

Posting 10 links to CL post without specific questions and an "ask" for expert opinions on all of them may not be the way to go about it....

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck in your search.

Regards,

Omer

+1

Well-said, Omer!

And, 202Nik, not trying to discourage you, but my reaction to 10 totally-undigested Craig's List postings with a request that someone provide values for each of the 10 cars -- yes, I'm one of the grumpy old men -- was "Are you out of your friggin' mind?  Get off your a**, do some work, and come to us with specific questions!"  Others may be kinder and gentler than I -- Omer certainly comes to mind -- but you'll get MUCH more out of this forum if you understand how we work.  We are here to assist, not to do 100% of the work.

Moreover, no one on this forum can give you a definitive value for any particular car.  Some will provide guesses, some will provide ranges, many of the most knowledgable won't even venture a guess or a range -- the market is all over the place and regional differences remain substantial -- but you need to first figure out precisely what YOU are looking for in an '02, and your budget, and how far you're willing to travel to find the right car.

For example, are you a long-time '02 owner who can disassemble and re-assemble an '02 in your sleep, and an experienced body man and mechanic with every tool under the sun?  Or is this your first car and you wouldn't know a distributor from a carburetor?  It makes a difference in an '02's value to you.

Again, we can help.  But you need to show us that you've done your work.

Regards,

Steve

Number 3 and 7 are the same car...

Number 9 at $1500 is a good deal, to part out, the dash is worth $400+

OK, 202Nik, Omer and Mark have already done more work on these "candidates" than you have....

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
