Loves bikes.

Love beemers.

HATE the cafe fad.  They ain't racers.  Lots of nice classic bikes are getting hacked up to make these "original" creations that all look the same.

(Yes,  this is coming from a guy who hacked up a perfectly good 2002.  But at least it really is a racer.....)

ok ok ok........breeeath....lol

it may be a  "fad"  now...but its as old as you are....lol ....seriously.....the history is quite rich.

anyhew....

yes some nice bikes are getting hacked.......but some crap  dying in junk yards are getting new leases on life as well.

Independent of ruining good bikes.........a well done café ride is a sweet lil hot rod...and some are lovely to look at........u cant argue w/ that.

some/most! well done 02 hot rods never see the track...you know that,....

I have a 1974 Honda CB550. I got it running well, and have clocked over 1000 miles in about a month. It's not modified aside from a 4-1 exhaust system, pods, and carb rejetting to accommodate the mods. I really enjoy the bike. I sometimes thing that it would be fun to cafe, but then I also think that it would be easier to get a more modern bike that meets my requirements better than a cafe'd vintage Honda motorcycle.

Logic, what even is it?

I think all logic is thrown out the window in Motorcycle land.

some cars

some motorcycles

some airplanes

some surfboards

I like the wheels, tires, frame and tank.

I hate the huge front brake and seat.

It's just OK.

I like the Cafe' look if you keep it period correct (70's ish).  I don't like how they tried to make it look like a crotch rocket.

I think this is way cooler:

If it keeps one more airhead from the crusher and brings in some youth, I don't care what they do. Right now the majority of airhead BMW owners I know are well north of their 40's. if I keep my two 1983 R80RT's close to stock, their resale will only rise.

Research is your friend.

I like this book:

https://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Buyers-Guide-Mark-Zimmerman/dp/0760311641/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476558317&sr=8-1&keywords=bmw+motorcycle+buyers+guide

There are airhead forums too.  Here's the one I use:

My only other advice - buy local if you can.  I got my bike on e-bay, and it was not as nice as advertised.  I spent a lot of time going through it and fixing stuff, and I shouldn't have had to given how much I paid.

Here is an 'original' creation that does not look quite the same.

It is a Beemer too, so not off topic, here in the off topic section.

It is not a racer...

DISCLAIMER -- I now disagree with much of the timing advice I have given in the past.  I misinterpreted the distributor curves in the Blue Book as timing maps for our engines.  I've also switched from using ported-vacuum to manifold, with better results.  I apologize for adding confusion.  (3-28-2024)

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
