Tranny Mounts for M42 Swap

Recommended Posts

I've finished the first test fit of the M42 and 5 speed but have a question about the trans mount. I am using Jakes mounts (engine and trans) as well as his headers.

My car is a 76 and originally came with an automatic so I believe the tunnel is a little wider than the 4 speed model.

I shaved the top flanges off the trans per Jakes PDF and it looks like I have room to mount the shifter and test fit a modified plate per his instructions.

My concern is that my tunnel appears to be too wide to use Jakes mount. His instructions say to just drill through the floor but I'm concerned my holes will be too close to the shoulder of the tunnel.

I cut out the original mounts as they were clearly too far forward and were preventing me from being able to raise the transmission high enough into the tunnel.

Has anyone else used Jakes mounts in an auto? As an alternative, should I source an E30 mount and modify it? Or, should I install new brackets and modify Jakes mount to use those?

Also, how much room should there be between the top of the tranny and the tunnel. I realize this might be an impossible question to answer but I'm trying to get the trans mounted before cutting the driveshaft (as it's easier to move mounts than lengthen a driveshaft!).

Edit: I have not emailed Jake yet about this but figured I would post this on the forum just in case someone else needs this. I will wait for responses on this forum before I email him. He's been very helpful so far so hopefully he will reply here so it can be shared.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
