Turn Signal / Wiper Switch - Right Side of Steering Column question

I'm having an issue in that my wipers do not function from the turn signal wiper switch. They will only function if I pull the the wiper speed button. In using the wiper speed button the wipers will park immediately when I push the button back in.

All other electrical items function perfectly. I did notice that there is a purple wire with a connector hanging from my turn signal wiper switch wiring. There is also another wire (brown and green ?) with a connector and wonder if that is part of the problem. The wiper relay is fine. I can live with the wiper in this condition but would like to understand if this is a wiring issue or something with an easy fix.

Thanks for any help

Russ

What year and wiring type (6 fuse vs 12), etc? The early roundies had only turn signal and washer/wiper function on the right stalk switch and what you are describing would be normal functioning...

The problem may be the itty bitty switch inside the turn signal/wiper stalk, or the equally itty bitty wires that run up the stalk to the switch.  The wires can break at the base of the stalk from constant flexing, and/or the switch can go bad.

I did a Roundel column on troubleshooting those '72/73 turn signal/wiper switches; drop me an IM if you'd like a copy.

I dunno about that. On both my '73's. the wiper speed button is for speed only; out for slow, in for slower :-p

The stalk switch starts and stops the wipers, and allows them to park in the proper position. Well, as designed anyway!

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P

My 70 (built in 69) has the right stalk switch only controlling turn signals and windshield washer. The right stalk switch has the spade terminal connections in the back of the switch. The binnacle wiper pull switch is three position (off, slow, high).  I think it was in 72-73 that there was the change to 12 fuses, the turn signals switched to the left side stalk, the right side stalk switch added the wiper on-off to the wiper/washer, and the pull switch changed to only wiper speed.

I love these cars and the way things evolved. Direct knowledge is clearly king here.  I know the Restorer's Reference Guide indicates that the change occurred in the "Model 73 saloons" to meet ISO standards, but that doesn't mean it got to the US then (or consistently).

"Model 73" is factory nomenclature for the square taillight cars, because they arrived August 1973.

Just out of interest, does your "O"il light come on? Isnt the Brown/Green for that?

Oil light does come on.

I believe the purple or violet wire from the wiper switch is a hot wire

Not sure about the brown/green-looks like it comes from ignition so it may also be a hot wire

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
