Steering Shaft Removal - SOS!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

After searching FAQ and not finding an answer, i need some help in removing the steering shaft.  I have the shaft separated from the flex coupling.  The shaft will pull out about 2" and then stop as if there was a pin or some other type of limiter.  When I pull hard into the stop, the sound appears to come from the area of the ignition switch.  I confirmed that there is no other obstruction from the engine side of the firewall. The Haynes manual suggests it should just slide out of the column once the shaft is removed from the flex coupling.

I will send video/pictures later if it helps.

Thanks

Are you trying to pull the shaft out of the tube, leaving the tube in the  car?  I've always unbolted the whole mess...

You've found the clip at the top of the tube if you get 2", and the steering lock SHOULD also be free

if you've gotten that far.  And I can't imagine you haven't pulled the flange ears off the bottom of the shaft...

Hmmm, it might be pic time.

Looks like you are close.

The remaining cup needs to be freed from the shaft.

The 4 small irregular shaped areas under the cup allow some sort of wedge in place to separate the two parts.

Once separated the shaft should come out all the way.

Finally!

once column was out of car, used shaft to bang out bearing from column. Make sure the key is in on so not to damage steering lock.

Bearing came apart when coming out of column, had to grind edge of bearing carrier so locking ring could fit.

Here is final picture

thanks to all for the help.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
