I believe that's the Inka '73 tii that then-Mobile Tradition built about 10 years ago from parts available through Mobile Tradition (excepting the body shell, unfortunately).  Very cool car--and basically a brand new '73 tii.  I got to drive it in 2007 when it had about 2500 km on the odometer.

Oh cool, I wondered if it was the famous MT car! Even cooler that you got to drive it! How did you pull that one off?

I don't think that's right.  I think it's a '68 2002.

Different ad, but same license plate, and likely same car.

It's a '73, ''68s don't have the lower belt molding.

Ah, no.  Pretty sure that's a 73.  Bumpers, grills and mirrors suggest.  Plus, FWIW, that commercial was first aired in 2010 during the winter Olympics.

Not sure about 2002's, but my '68 1600 had no head rests. The car in the ad clearly does.

It looks to me that the ad car may not be the Munich tii. Is "mwerks" affiliated with BMW? The car in this link has slightly different license plate than the ad car's. Anybody know about German plates? Do they change by year?

Not meaning to hijack this, but what got me looking at this is that my daughter purchased the cup in my avatar for me at the BMW museum about 3 years ago. The '02 pictured on the cup is a different car, a colorado (I think) ti (I can barely make out the grill badge), and it has the the same license plate as the one that's in this link:

However, BMW may have more than one Inka '02! Go figure.

The description from BMW:

"The legendary 1968 BMW 2002 helps usher in a new generation of driving. Introducing the first-ever BMW 2 Series."

Methinks they're talking about the birth of the 2002 model in general when they reference "1968," not THAT car which is clearly a 1973 example.

That '02 on your BMW Museum is a 2002Ti.

The Inka 02 in that first pic is indeed the Mobile Tradition 2002tii, which they built up for the 40th anniversary in 2006.
They built it using a new body shell which they bought from Andy Andexer, and then parts mostly from Mobile Tradition, and then of course a few specially produced parts for this particular car to pull of the stunt.
But Mike, technically it's not  '73 car either.  The German authorities wouldn't allow BMW to give it a 7 digit chassis number, so instead they had to give it a modern day BMW chassis number, thereby making it a '06 BMW 2002tii.
But you are of course right that they have tried to make it appear as a '73 car.  I just wish they had given the car the correct trapezoid door mirror!!

I don't know, Anders!  The concours judges say any '02 from late '74 onward get flag mirrors, and 2006 sure sounds like "'74 onward" to me.... ?

Best regards,

Steve

HaHaHa... fair point - well kind of...  ;)

I suppose the '06 tag would then also justify all of the other inaccuricies on the MT 2002, such as the plastic roundel on the nose, the bigger and modern-day washer bottle with a black lid, the use of the wrong material for the carpets etc etc.  All of these inaccuricies are perhaps not wrong at all??  Quite the contrary, they are perhaps exactly how a totally original and unmolested '06 BMW 2002tii should be, as this is of course how the car left the factory.

Oh dear, I've just managed to thoroughly confuse my 'Das Original Polizei' mind...!!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
