Clutch Master Cylinder Bad?

The car: 1972 tii, 320i 5 speed.

The problem: I'm having trouble getting into/out of gear. The clutch pedal won't return properly, like pressure isn't being built back up. When the car is in gear with the clutch in, she will stall. I get it stalled into my parking spot, and get out, notice a trail of fluid on the ground, so I pop the hood. I see that there is fluid dripping onto the pittman arm coming from what appears to be the clutch master cylinder. It wasn't air in the lines because my fluid reservoir is full (enough). I talk it over with my dad, and we both decide that it seems like the clutch MC. From searching on here, I've found a couple other owners had similar symptoms. Just wanted to verify with the forum before I go ordering parts.

The question: Replace the slave and master at the same time (slave was done a couple years back when I replaced the clutch/pressure plate/throw out bearing)? I'm living in the barracks for MOS training right now, and don't have tools on me, but I have friends with tools. What all will I need to get them to bring with them?

Clutch masters when they leak, leak into the cabin and into the pedal box under the carpet. Definitely check you dont have brake fluid in your pedal box ruining your carpet!

There is nothing hard about the replacement job, basic hand tools will do the job easily. Have to lift the carpets to gain access to the pedal box assembly. 

 

Slave is likely fine and no point changing it now.

Agreed- fix what's leaking.

 

I remember a 13mm socket with a few extensions and a wobbly made the job easier,

and if you have a buddy on the underside of the car with a wrench, it's really quick

to unbolt the master.  The pedal connection is big- 17 or 19 on one side, 13 on the other.

(from memory, so check me) and wrenches are the only things that fit in there.

There are 2 thin plastic bushings in the pedal connection that wear out,

so if you're ordering parts in advance, get those.  AND, if you get motivated, 

now is the time to re- bush the pedal pivots.  Or not, if they feel ok.  DO lube things- it helps a lot

with wear later.

The hydraulic connection to the clutch is... hmm, 14mm?  OR 11mm, depending on which 

clutch hose you have, and which way it's routed.

Got a new clutch master installed. Thought the flared hose that just fits into the rubber seal on the MC was the problem as the old one was cracked from age. Go to bleed the clutch, and a stream of fluid squirts onto my face. Turns out that the problem is the soft line connecting the clutch master and slaves has a hole in it. Got a new one on order from Steve.

 

My question is this: the way the hole was formed, it wasn't just a hole. It must have been resting on a hard line, because it looks like it was melted and formed to a hard line. Has anyone see this happen before? See pics for clarity.
