How many colors is your 02?

Recommended Posts

I took the headliner out of my parts car today and couldn't believe I found ANOTHER color to this car! That makes SIX different colors now! This car has had a rough life. One or two nose replacements, a roof replacement, shitty floor and trunk patches, at least one door swap, lots of tar like glue.

How many have you found on your '02?

These are the colors on this parts car:

#1 Chamonix (passenger door), #2 some non BMW red orange color

#3 Agave roof (transplant from another car)

#4 Siennabraun (original color of the car)

#5 Malaga (Inner nose clip)

#6 Golf yellow nose

I can't (yet) reach 6 colors, but I'm seeing 5 thus far on the '73, working in rough chronological order:

1. Factory = Inka

2. Left front fender replaced with a fender from a pre-April '71 car (doesn't appear to be drilled for knee trim) = Chamonix

3. Entire car miserably re-painted = Malaga

4. and 5.  After Malaga re-paint, hood hinge bar replaced but not painted to match = Unknown Blue over Fjord metallic

I'm betting this car's re-painting -- it's waiting patiently for the '76's re-paint to be completed -- will reveal more tidbits of the '73's sordid, sad, or just-plain-raucous history!

Regards,

Steve

Wow, more multi colored cars out there than I would of thought! Glad this thing isn't the only one!

Seeing that used parts have been a common repair approach on '02's since...probably late 1966...I believe there are lots of swapped-out doors, fenders, hoods, and rear deck lids.  Of course, assuming the car was re-painted after the swap, the current owner may not even realize it.  Back in the '70's, strip-to-bare-metal re-paints on most cars were very rare, so the evidence survives until that first good re-repaint!

Uh-oh!  Story time!

I purchased my first '02, a very early '70 (VIN 1668093), with body damage to the front left corner.  It needed a fender, nosepiece, hood, radiator, and most of the trim pieces for that corner.  It was June '73 and the car had been sitting with this damage for at least 9 months.  (It might have been closer to a year, but I never did find the date of the accident.)  The car had 28,000 miles on it and was virtually mint but for the accident damage. It was clean enough, and low-mileage enough, that the owner had insisted and the insurance company had agreed to use new BMW parts for the repair.  The parts had been ordered and in the months since the accident, a few trim pieces -- beltline trim and front grille -- had arrived, but NOT 1 of the major pieces -- fender, nosepiece, or hood -- had arrived.  THAT was the state of Hoffman Motors's replacement parts program at that place and time!  I watched the car sit for months before tracking down the owner and asking if he wanted to sell the car.  After at least 9 months of fruitless waiting, he sold me the car for $300, received some sort of settlement from his insurance company who was tired of renting him a car, and I had the car repaired with used body pieces, which took a week to find.  Message: Hoffman Motors' notoriously mis-managed U.S. parts operation encouraged the re-use of major body parts from early on!

Regards,

Steve

Nate too funny you posted this. In cleaning the 73 I got a little over a month ago I noticed that the rear portion of the right fender was a graft; in it i have four colors; but you got me on total colors. Maybe I'll find more when it gets a new fresh coat of paint in the future. :)

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
