Getrag Gearbox not self centering

I have a Getrag 245/10 close ratio dog-leg gearbox. Currently it is out of the car.

 

I need to rebuild the shifter cause there is a lot of slop in it. However apart from the slop the shifter refuses to self centre. Things I have done to diagnose the self centering issue:

 

1) pulled the entire shift platform off. So the only thing left is the box with the input shaft.

 

2) Opened the 19mm detent plug at back right hand side of the box. Removed the plunger and the spring. I checked through the hole of the detent and I can see the drum with a V shaped notch is present. Which means the head of the plunger (male end) fits in to this V (female end).

 

3) cleaned the plunger and spring and reinstalled it. I put a screwdriver in to the the hole of the input shaft and rotated it left to right just as you would wiggle the gearstick left to right in neutral. Unfortunately when turned to left I feel no resistance from spring and there is no self centering effect. However on turning the shaft to the right there is a self centering effect because I can feel the resistance from the spring.

 

4) I thought may be the spring has lost some of its compression capacity and has become a bit smaller in length. So I put a couple of washers between the detent plug and the spring and reinstalled it back in to the box. It  certainly did increase the spring tension  but it didnt help at all with self centering the stick.

 

Any ideas why my gearbox is doing this? Anyone ever faced this issue before?

Thanks Toby. No it is not the reverse detent. The way I know this is I removed the plug, plunger and the spring and tried shifting without it. I also put it in reverse gear and I could feel the detent in reverse. There must be a different spring for the reverse.  

 

The spring I removed is def the self centring spring that forces the gear stick to spring back in the 2/3 gate position when let go in neutral.

 

Ugh... I have been scouring the internet like crazy to work out why it will not self centre. Let me know if something else jumps out at you that I may have missed.

Ok, I hit realoem-

and I have an idea. 

There are 2 pics shown- one for the 245-10, which has a pin- shaped plunger, #4245 interlock.jpg

The other is labelled for the 242, but it's greyed, as in, not applicable.  (#5) Yet,

that's how the standard 245 gets its detents.

 

If you have the standard 245 plunger, it may be rotated 180

from how it should be.  See how it's asymmetrical?

That would still give you

a reverse spring, but MAYBE not a 'gate' spring.

 

Otherwise, I am lost, unless the shift selector shaft, or the detent plunger, have been worn or damaged.

There aren't any other gating springs shown in the 245-10...

PS, I never knew about sleeve, #10.  That may explain a few problems I've had in the past...

Also, see how the interlocks on the main shaft, for the 245-10

are also greyed out?  18's a lock pin, not a detent pin, but is spring loaded, so it might instead be

the reverse detent spring.  It can't be the gate spring.  I wonder if the 245-10 HAS a gate spring.

The Nissan 5- speed does not, for 1-2 and 3-4...
