Megasquirt Complete, Time for a Turbo

Recommended Posts

Just picked my car up at Midnight Motorsport. Patrick has had it for the last few weeks while he worked on a megasquirt conversion and a few other loosely related projects.

I helped a little bit with disassembly. This is pretty much where Patrick took over.

Now it looks like this;

Not obvious in the shot is the upgrade to an 85a e30 alternator and edis ignition. I really like the crinkle paint on the intake manifold, valve cover, and water neck.

Battery is in the trunk now;

And so is the fuel filler;

IMG_0792.JPG

I won't miss the akward crouch and 1/2 speed fill ups at the pump.

Added a full suite of Innovate MTX gauges to match my AFR gauge;

IMG_0794.JPG

Unfortunately, the water temp is reading 11-13 degrees high compared to the Megasquirt sensor. These gauges are dual function with the left gauge showing oil pressure on the numerical readout and oil temp around the perimeter, center gauge is water temp on the numerical readout and volts around the perimeter.

Drive home was on the freeway, then I went for a quick backroad drive. Wow, what a difference! More low end torque and lots more top end power than before. I used to shift around 5k under full throttle, but there's another .5-1k of usable power band now and it gets there a lot quicker.

Interesting side note was the pretty significant decrease in engine noise. I'm guessing this is reduced induction noise. Sounds great still, but I should be less fatigued after a long drive.

I'm really pleased with the final result and Patrick did a great job with all the details. He was also able to get it running well an hour after first start, and pretty well tuned after a couple hours of me driving him around earlier this week.

Oh yes megasquirt is a big deference in the way the motor runs and feels .., question who's and where did you purchase your strut brace ..

It's from Mason Engineering. They don't make strut braces for our cars anymore though. I picked this one up from another FAQ member.

Sweet! Very tidy package and I can confirm that Brent's car pulls like a train ?. Patrick is a master with this stuff.

I didn't realize Patrick also did the fuel filler. Nice.

Looking forward to hanging out Sunday and checking out all the other cars.

See you there James. Hopefully we don't get rained on too bad.

I need to get to work on cleaning up the car to make it somewhat presentable.

Yeah, that's Seattle for you.

No need to spend too much time cleaning. We're all going to looking at those new engine bits anyway. One of the nice things about owning a car that still needs body and paint, we don't need to obsess about making it shinny and perfect... Yet.

I'm mostly thinking about cleaning up the tops of the inner fenders, radiator core support, etc so as to not distract from the shiny engine bits. This has always been a hood closed car. Not anymore.

The body and wheels will just get a quick wash. Interior will get a quick vacuum and if I really feel motivated, some carpet, rear seat, and rear side panels.

Mason engineering is not far from where I live.  I called them several months ago about a brace.  Yes they would make me one for ... wait for it ... $1200 ... OUCH

filler looks racey...I woulda put it THRU the rear trunk.....!!!!!

That would be pretty cool. ?

I just filled it up with gas. It fills like a modern car. Just insert the pump, set the handle lock, and let it go. Shuts off at the top of the tank but before it fills the tube to the cap.

Ouch indeed! I paid just a bit less than that. I really lucked out as this is either the Tii or S14 version, I can't recall. The regular version wouldn't have cleared the 320i intake manifold.

Patrick had a suggestion for the next project;

But that'll have to wait until I have a bit more track time under my belt.

Hope you have a firmly locked/otherwise secured original gas cap in place (it appears that you do).  A friend once dumped over a gallon of gas into his friend's race car's trunk at a mid-race pit stop because he wasn't told that the race car had a fuel cell with an in-trunk filler.  And that gallon of gas ran all through the trunk and dripped onto a hot exhaust pipe!  Fortunately for all concerned there was no fire (I was manning the fire extinguisher with the pin already pulled and the nozzle aimed).

Nice, neat installation at both ends, incidentally.

Cheers

Yes, I have a locking original gas cap and the key to it is going in the toolbox.

I read a story like this a while ago (perhaps it was in a post from you) and do not want to repeat a mistake like that.

Thanks for reminding me though. Gas cap is locked and the key is in the toolbox.

That injection looks awesome.  Is that a full, complete, kit you can purchase or do you still have to piece it all together?  I'm dig'en on the intake and such.

Definitely custom. Manifold is from an early e30 318i, throttle body is from an e30 325i, ignition system is from a 1990s Ford escort, and everything else is either sourced or fabricated as individual bits.

    Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
