Transmission Speedo Cable Drive Not Working

I have a 5 speed transmission in my tii but the drive mechanism that spins the speedometer cable does not work. A while back I did replace some internal parts where the cable inserts into the transmission but nothing. The transmission shifts smoothly so is it possible that deeper inside the transmission the speedo drive mechanism is broken and the remedy is to get another transmission so I can have a functioning speedometer? The cable is brand new, correct length and spins freely.

Any insights are truly appreciated. Thanks.

Has it ever worked?  If not someone might have rebuilt the gearbox and forgotten to put the drive gear for the speedo on the output shaft.  You are sure the speedo cable is fully engaged into the drive at the trans?

I don't know if it ever worked as the cable was never hooked up when the transmission was converted over from the 4spd. I am fairly certain that I did get the cable properly seated in the transmission so it's sounding like I will have to replace the transmission or at the very least have someone take it apart?

Thanks for the comments.

Have you looked inside the opening and see whats in there?  You should be able to see the diamond/ square shaped (depending on position of the internal gear) part where the cable goes into.  If so, raise the back of the car up, have vehicle in neutral and turn the driveshaft/ output shaft by hand.  If you see it turning then at least you have a place to start.  It could also be rounded.  Either way it should be the same shape as the tip of the cable and fitment should be perfect.

No problem.  Here's some links from realoem that may help.  I'm going to assume you have a Getrag 245 Overdrive and not a close ratio so that is what

I looked up.  First link is all the sections of a few transmissions if you want to take a peak at other sections of yours, the other two are the pics I think you need to look at specifically.  I think according to the second link the speeds should spline onto the lower right gear (5-rs/ 6-rs) but its hard to tell. Best of luck!!!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
