So...what's the manufacturing date for your 167XXXX car?  Have you requested Archives' data yet, as illustrated above in  Dionk's last post?

Regards,

Steve

Yes - it was manufactured on January 13th, 1971 and delivered on January 18th, 1971 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City.

That's only a two week difference from when Dionk's car was manufactured.  It looks like the jump to the 257xxxx VINs happened in mid-to-late January.

Eric,

Congrats and welcome back to the world of 02's. We have more family fun in and with the 02 than really any other car we've ever owned. Everything in the 02 is an adventure. Even bad adventures are great ones...because you are together and you are in an 02.

Two years ago my then, 8 and 6 year old 'helped me' change the oil in our 02. It was the most stressful 2 hour oil change, and Q&A session (more like the Spanish Inquisition) in my life. But in the end, when they both went upstairs and told my wife 'Hey we just changed the oil in Tina (our 02)' it was truly a fantastic feeling knowing that their first oil change was done as a team and on the 02. From there it's been our family car of adventure. The car that 'not just dad' can work on.

Don't be surprised if you become 'the guy' who has to drive all the kids in the neighborhood to ice cream on a Saturday. They have that type of electricity.

Welcome back to one of the greatest groups in the world.

Very interesting, indeed: the change in VIN series appears to be un-related to any technical changes of which I'm aware.  Anyone know what might have been happening in January 1971?  Was it simply preparatory to the modell 71 changes, or could Euro-version changes have occurred in January, triggering a change in VIN ranges, even if U.S.-version changes happened a bit later?

By the by, what is your car's VIN, as manufactured on January 13th, 1971?  The VIN decoder of the BMW 2002 Club of Columbia suggests that VINs after 1679260 were manufactured after December 31, 1970 so I'm guessing yours is 1679261 or later!

Regards,

Steve

No problem - glad to contribute to the collective knowledge.

Yes, mine is later - *9357.  It looks like it could be one of the last 167xxxx cars out there.  Based on this thread, though, it doesn't look like the jump fro 167 to 257 signifies any body/model changes?

  • 2 weeks later...

Just wanted to say hello - I am in Cincinnati, too.  Looks like a great project.  Really weird that someone cut the axle shafts like that.  I can only figure that the car wouldn't roll, and that was the shortcut.  Which would explain the extra diff.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Our car contains many stories, and we don't know any of them. For example, what happened to the drive shafts?! And is this why an extra differential was included in the parts? Hmmm...

Uh, they could have unbolted/removed the halfshafts !!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
