Hey folks--part of this post was originally posted in the wrong section (my mistake!) so I just wanted to cross post here for updates.

I thought now would be a good time to introduce myself.  I’ve been a longtime lurker and had a few BMW’s throughout the years (E21, E28, E34, E38) but have finally found an ’02 for myself.  Some of you will likely recognize the car—it belonged to two forum members prior to my ownership.  I was fortunate enough to pick the car up from Ben Younce’s enviable garage and met some great folks while I was at it.

The car is a Verona red (original color respray) 1976 2002 with a tii motor and an E12 head.  As was described to me, the provenance of the car is largely unknown, but it is in great shape and a ton of fun for my purposes.  I hope to keep the car on the road and enjoy driving it.  It really is a blast to drive and the extra 20-30 horsepower and tighter chassis really make it a night and day difference from my former E21.

In the past few weeks of ownership, I’ve done a few minor things just to put my own personal touch on the car.  I realize that this one’s probably not for the purists, but man do I love it.

This thread will serve as a place for me to keep tabs of the car as well as post the occasional picture.  I look forward to getting to know some of you and am continually blown away by the wealth of information that this site provides.

Cheers!

Just a quick update--

Received some lovely Marchal's and some euro turn signals over the past few weeks.  I think the yellow lenses really play well with the Verona.

I've also sourced a Getrag 245 that I've been cleaning up over the past few days.  I still need to clean the input shaft (it has a bit of surface rust, so I'm planning to use a little WD40 and steel wool) and replace the seals.  I've got an IE short shift kit and shifter plate on the way and I'm planning to have my flywheel lightened and resurfaced.  With a little luck, I should have everything I need to complete the swap by the end of May.

I need to work on the driver's door.

The door needs to be slammed somewhat firmly in order to seal properly.  I've done some research and think I know what I need to do.

I also had an original tii air cleaner cleaned and powder coated, but still haven't figured out a satisfactory way to have it securely mounted to my '76 chassis.

I'm also wavering back and forth on the IE front air dam (interestingly, I'm also thinking about reverting back to the E30 steelies).  Unfortunately, it's been riveted in place, so if I were to take it off, I'd have to deal with holes in the valence.

Does anyone have a current solution for the mirror cage nuts that are NLA?  I've tried the jack-nuts mentioned in some of the previous threads when I searched, but they're simply too large for the set screws.  My mirrors are only getting looser...

Getting closer to the 5 speed swap.  Still need to order a clutch kit, have my flywheel lightened/resurfaced, and have the driveshaft work done, but those are on hold until I'm able to see what size flywheel I actually have and take measurements (in other words, until I can have the car down for a week or two while those parts are ordered/work is done).  I'm a bit nervous about replacing the pivot pin, but I've read that I should freeze it and torch the bell housing... fingers crossed there.  I'll also have my Stahl header blasted and coated when the transmission is out.

I'm considering a battery relocation as well given the tii air cleaner won't clear the higher battery position of the '76 chassis.  Work on the center console is underway and I also have a seat trade in the works for some E21 Recaros.

Lastly, I'm thinking of replacing my Ansa exhaust for an IE early kit and relocating the mounts and exhaust cut-out to the right side.

Just a quick shot from this past weekend's Cars and Coffee.  Swapped out the seats for some E21 Recaros and painted the steelies a dark grey.  I think it's beginning to shape up!  Next up: 5 speed, Etsy S&P kit, and (maybe) a front bumper!

Well, it's been a while and not a whole has happened.  Repainted the steelies, installed an IE ss exhaust...  Here are a couple of shots from this weekends BMWCCA show & shine (2nd place!).

Looks like a great car! You're not too far away - if you ever find yourself in Louisville, KY give me a holler. And if you haven't already, look up the Rivertown Gear Busters on facebook - would be great to see you out!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
