FINALLY got the new exhaust installed! Decided to take a chance and go with IE SS. So far, so good; no rattling/banging against the trans tunnel or rear axle/subframe. Sounds great-deeper purr at idle and definitely louder under acceleration and at cruising speed. Can't wait for the 5 spd swap to happen, as it should sound great shifting through the gears. Did I mention how much I like dry CA cars???;)

Today's project:

Yesterday I scored (for free no less!) a correct valve cover for my car that was actually cast the same month that my car was built-3/73! As it wasn't too grimy to begin with, I simply scrubbed it thoroughly with Simple Green MAX, rinsed well, air dried and then proceeded to paint it. I went with caliper paint from DupliColor with a 500 deg rating as the color seemed fairly close to freshly media-blasted aluminum. After letting it dry overnight I installed it today and was able to check valvetrain condition as well as my timing chain, which seems to have been replaced at some point as it's all shiny, nice and taut. Only drawback with the cover is that it has some nice battle scars which I can't do anything with but, ehh.

It was a good day.

2 irksome rust spots I need to deal with ASAP:

My car is extremely dry/rust free except for a small hole (directly above the tow hook on the underside of the well) and some surrounding surface rust in the spare wheel well and then the area (most likely due to sub-par work when the RR qtr was replaced at some point, and which frightens me a bit!) behind the right trunk hinge. I want to get both taken care of before we really swing into the wet and rainy season, as this is my DD.

I'm going to ask Bill and Ken at Motorspeed West for bodyshop recommendations, BUT if any of you fine folk have someone to recommend who won't extort a phenomenal amt of $$$ from me, I'd be much obliged...

BTW, I also have this posted on the BayArea02 thread so I can capture as many local replies as possible.

As I can't afford paint/bodywork right now (and certainly not the rims that I want), a 5 spd conversion or the suspension setup that I have in mind, I'm doing little (read INEXPENSIVE) things to continue to improve the driving experience and cosmetics until I can throw a lot of money at the car.

So, recently I scored a set of near mint bottlecaps w/like new ctr caps for a song and finally removed the AC compressor, which was starting to rattle like crazy due to the rubber bushings on the bolts having disintegrated. After the rain stops I'll remove the rest of the AC crap in the engine bay. Also treated myself to some new chrome lug nuts from RogersTii...a bit long, but ehh.

Little steps, but they'll add up...it's all positive.

Did they also do the inner fenders and the wheels for $300?

My guy down here charges $225 and he'll do everything you listed, including inner fenders. It's nice to compare.

A few simple holiday gifts to myself: a clean set of used roundie tail light lens from BLUNT and a pair of very clean Autoflug rear seat belts (in my exuberance while cleaning them, I managed to tear one of the labels off-GRRR) from DenverTii/Bryce!

My right rear lens was actually a "left", and to boot it had a missing inner fresnel.  As for the belts, my car had none when I purchased it, and I'm wondering if they were ever installed, as there are no mounting marks surrounding the bolts under the rear seat:

My 1600 has the same crack on the driver side, except mine happened on the first day of driving it after the restoration.

I would have loved to get 6 months out of the windshield before the crack!

Luckily it's really small-not even the size of a dime-so I'm having it fixed this wk (insurance'll cover it), and will post a pic of the work after. Looks like another thing to replace though when I finally get it painted this summer...

Also cleaned/lubed the lock/window crank mechanisms the other day as they've been a bit stubborn for my wife and daughter. Gave me a chance to look at the interior of the door-looks great, NO rust/corrosion. Will be doing the Aardvark door panel/mylar refurb soon AND of course replace the half-assed water barrier. OY.

New gaskets make everything feel better.  The polished pieces look mahvelous!

I think that they might be original along with the lenses, as the car was in storage for 22 yrs prior to my purchase and I'm not sure if BMW was reproducing those pieces before to that.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
