New to the Forum/Houston Area

Hey everybody - I just moved to Houston from Boston and very recently bought a 1970 '02. If anyone knows of any good shops in the Houston area (even better if they're in the Downtown/Montrose/Heights area) I'd really appreciate it. Thanks and I'll be sure to share photos as the project starts coming together.

Lots of Houston 02ers out there.  Lebowski and I are in the Austin area with about a dozen cars we know about....

If you can't find a good shop in Houston, bring it to Terry Sayther in south Austin, his Vintage Bimmers shop will get you right... and ask to get hooked up with Terry's 02berfest drives, one in the Spring and one in the Fall.

Welcome to Texas... you can trade in your snow shovel for mosquito spray... :)

Thanks for the welcome/information. I've heard about Terry's shop and I think I'll actually make the drive out in the next month or so to see if we can work something out. I'd like to do a pretty comprehensive restoration - eventually doing a transmission and engine swap, as I want to be able to use it as a daily driver and autocross it. Might be a bit too aspirational, but goals are nice to have!

I'll continue keeping my eyes open for 02's in the area. I've seen a couple, but my sightings have generally seemed few and far between. Glad to know there's a good group in the nearby vicinity, even if not right in town. I'll be sure to let you know when I make it to Austin.

Keep looking for those 02's on the road.  There out there!  There are 11 of us up here in the Austin area that text regularly for advice and what not.  We're hoping for a kind of cars and coffee meet up Saturday morning the 23rd.  But I can tell you that there are bunch more 02's running around the ATX.  Heck, I just spotted another one this past week here in Cedar Park.

NKND,

First, welcome to Houston.

Second, I have no good advice on a shop for 2002's, though Steve C always recommends these guys: http://www.munichmotorwerke.com/

Third, we have a group of folks in Houston that get together (somewhat irregularly).  You can keep track via FB - https://www.facebook.com/groups/245579415621567/

Fourth, Terry Sayther is hosting a spring '02berfest drive in the Hill Country (check under "Events").  This is a great time to get together with TX '02ers and is always a fun drive.

Last, I am in the same neighborhood and drive a Fjord blue 2002tii.  Feel free to PM me if you would like to grab a beer.

Thanks for the welcome and the information - I think I may have spotted your car at Blacksmith a time or two.

I'll be in Japan for about 4 weeks, from the end of March until late April, so unfortunately, I'll miss the '02berfest. That said, the car is very definitely a project (for daily driving and autocross), so I think it might be ok if I were to miss this year haha.

First up: brakes, suspension and interior trim...

That would certainly be Sputter.  Blacksmith is in the rotation.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
