215mm flywheel: rust pitting

Can a rust-pitted flywheel be resurfaced on the lathe?  Assuming the .5mm step is preserved?

Also, would you take the opportunity to lighten it a bit, or not?  Why?

Thanks :)

Yes, and yes.

But that said, what's a few pits between friends?  the surface finish doesn't matter all that much, as long as it's not warped.

Lathe, surface grinder, it's all good.  If you do lighten it, though, it's worth the money to get it balanced afterwards...

I had a 228 mm flywheel lightened by a local machine shop that does racing engines, and they took half-moon bites from around the edge of the flywheel, between the pressure plate mounting bolts.  Removing metal from the outer edge is more beneficial than from towards the center due to centrifugal force.
