After 1 year that 21K Kia will be worth 8K

Nah, around twice that, and still worth more than most 02s:

Only drawback to their increasing value:  we get more reluctant to drive 'em for fear of some numskull hitting/wrecking our beloved--and now valuable--cars.

ref my earlier post....real car people don't care about value.  cars are meant to be driven, used up, and generate that smile on your face in a corner.   if you start pulling back on the enjoyment because the car may "lose value"......you are turning into an investor.

my car is massive fun on a track, or anywhere else it is moving.  it is not fun sitting in the garage "preserving value".

ignore dollar value...and the fun goes way back up to where it should be!   :)

"smiles per mile" should be the measure for cars.

They are not works of art. You do not gain their value by passive consumption without diminishing them (though I do enjoy looking at them). They are more like fine wines, yes keep them and enjoy their rarity but what is the point unless you plan to drink them one day.

The two do not have to be mutually exclusive. I'm a "car person", but I also care about my investment.

Exactly, and well said...They DON'T have to be mutually exclusive at all, and to suggest otherwise is pretty pompous...And by the way, who the heck anointed anyone here with the credentials to define just what a "real car person" is given that we come in so many different flavors? Absurd. It's like saying that a collector of fine wines is not a true Oenophile because he/she drinks them only on special occasions (but with great ecstasy) instead of guzzling them daily from a goblet.

Myself, I love the fact that my beloved '02s are on the one hand, wonderfully entertaining machines that fill my soul with indescribable driving pleasure...and on the other, they're strong, long-term investments that I can actually enjoy (unlike mutual funds or rental properties). When I'm bombing down a windy road in either my stock tii or my hyperactive M2 with a huge grin on my face, nobody can tell me I'm not a real car guy just because I drive them sparingly (but frequently) to keep them in pristine shape. I get the same amused reaction when some people say you're not a true enthusiast if you don't drive your '02 in the rain (which I personally don't).

In short, I think there's plenty of room here for ALL kinds of "real" car guys & gals, even (gasp) those who confess to caring about their value.

Those numbers are probably pretty accurate.  Nobody really wants the early year cars (67-75), as they're too old and unreliable.  The 76 model year, however, is without question the most desirable, and one should expect values to continue to skyrocket for 76s, especially for the coveted Verona red models.

best post ever.

picked up what i thought was a sound Verona Red '76

My cars are kind of garage queens.......only because I rarely have time to drive. Commuting Monday-Friday via mass transit means that weekends are the only opportunity to drive. And pleasure driving, well, not much time for that either. I guess I should be a seller. Nah, I love my cars too much to part with them.

My cars spend a lot if time in the garage as well. However on nice and dry weekends, I like to take them all out, Home Depot, grocery store or a nice drive through the mountains. I sure as heck know what their all worth and as investments, doing better than my others. Would I rather look at a number on a statement or be able to get into it and have fun driving? What's wrong with having a car as an investment?

Spot on. Should I sell my cars and put the money in a stagnant bank account? Should I hand it over to the crooks on Wall Street? Or, should I have a few cool vintage cars that I can drive even occasionally while they appreciate in value? The choice is clear to me and the wife. I might pop for a lift in the garage to add yet another cool vintage car.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
