I had one of David Lumbra's 4- speeds in the race car I bought, and I loved it.  To death, of course, because race car, but it was the nicest shifting 2002 trans I've ever driven.

I don't know if he still does them.

David Lumbra is retired. No longer doing anymore work.

Do you wish to stay local? If you wish to go anywhere, from what I have heard, Metric Mechanic is supposed to do some pretty good rebuilds. You can check their website and see.

JF Pros in Van Nuys. Jack Fahuna rebuilt and installed a stock 4-speed in my '73 tii. Shifted a bit stiffly at first but now it's sweet!

Thank you. How long ago bianchini?

How much did it cost?

I got it rebuilt this past summer. Had issues with 4th gear. I have a getrag 240 (2 piece out of an e21). I can't remember the cost but it was definitely less than I was planning for, so I would say he is on the cheaper cost side. He daily and tracks an e30 and has a few other nice cars he was working on- mid sixties vette, 70 plymouth cuda, fj40 land cruiser, willies jeep, etc. They know their transmissions.

Best of luck.

I'm also interested in the market for rebuilding my transmission. Does anyone have experience with shops in the Northeast?

Check with Sports Car Restoration in Plainville CT.

Thank you "bianchini", I just got home from dropping it off my transmission, (it was only 87-miles from the race car shop, about 2-hours). Should have it back by January 8th, (because of the Holidays and the short work weeks ahead)

Great to hear. There is a race shop down the street that sells redline transmission oil and a bunch of other cool stuff. Ask Pete about it. Its called ERC racing fuels. http://www.ercracingfuels.com/ if you go there, its kinda hard to find. On google maps it says it is before the train tracks, but it is actually the building right after it.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
