anywhere.

Very, very few older cars on the road out in the "wide open spaces" - zero '02s, 1 320 & 2 E30s; 3 air cooled bugs (oldest was a nice '67), 1 custom split windshield VW Type 2, 1 Porsche 930 turbo, a couple of late 60's Chevelles, and that was about it....

How much oil did you use? The reason I ask is I'm trying to establish what reasonable oil consumption should be. My Korman Stage @ rebuild with about 4,000 miles on it is using a quart every 600

level was about 2 mm above the full line on the dipstick, is in exactly the same place this morning.

Engine was rebuilt locally 10 months and about 12,000 miles ago (original early '69 block, 8 bolt crank, E12 head, 9.5 c.r. pistons reduced to 9.1, full balance, Schrick 284 cam).

Barry,

Sounds like a fun trip. Where did you go? Your 02's performance is reflective of how well you maintain your vehicle. Congrats on a successful trip without incident!

a side trip from Bullhead City to Kingman via back (way-back) roads, then up to Hoover Dam (took the tour - fascinating), over to Vegas for a drive down the strip and a look at a couple of the new casinos (wretched excess, but fun) and back to Bullhead.

Reason for the trip was a vist to my stepson's - he recently bought his first house at 24, and badly wanted his mom (& me) to see it (he also wanted to show off the Harley he recently built from a kit - unfortunately, he'd twisted off the grade 10 bolts that held the rear belt sprocket to the hub a few days earlier, so it wasn't in riding condition. I was really looking forward to seeing what 115 rear wheel hp of low end grunt felt like, too).

thinks it may be possible to tune some of the uneven idle out of it with careful jetting, but I haven't made time to get the car to him for dyno runs.

As far as using 87 octane gas, I havent tried - before rebuilding it, the engine didn't like 87 on stock compression, so I've stuck with 91 since the overhaul. Part of the issue may be the alphabet soup of additives we have to live with in CA, too....

contemplating for my eventual rebuild. BTW, my '69, which has a higher cr than the later cars is perfectly happy with 87 octane gas so it must be those CA additives. What fun you left coasters have--we just have salt to contend with.

Cheers

Mike

Good to see you again Barry. There was an '02 parked in the Texaco lot in Kettleman City on very early Thursday morning. Was too dark to see it on Saturday evening and the drivers were just a bit in a hurry! Forgot to mention it to you when we visited on Saturday. Also saw one parked on HWY 99 between Marysville and Oroville. None on the road though. Glad to be back!

moderate performance option - with a 245 OD 5 speed, 3:64 diff and 195/65x14 tires, we ran right around 3500 rpm at speeds of 75-80 mph and got mid 20 mpg mileage.

There are very few grades the car won't pull at 70 or better in 5th, even with two people and luggage aboard (for this trip, that meant a PACKED trunk and back seat, including a boxed 320 5 speed for delivery to Rob T)

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
