wipers going SLOOOOOOOW

the wipers on our 2002 are going excruciatingly slow. they are moving extremely sluggishly. does it sound like an electrical problem, the motor seems normal. anything i should look at first.

also, the heater fan doesn't work when i move the lever over. is that also a wiring issue?

-Open the hood and grab your hand down around the wiper linkage at the pivots that turn the wiper arms. That's the rusty greasy rod thingy hidden inside the upper portion of the bulkhead. Move the linkage up and down.

- There should not be a lot of play in the pivot assemblies. If there is, it means that the pivot shaft is getting ready to separate from the knurled nut that holds the wiper arm. When the pivot shaft drops out of the knurled nut, it lodges in the shaft housing and locks up the wiper linkage, and you lose a wiper arm onto the hood or the side of the road.

- Also, make sure the linkage joints move freely, and the plastic washer are intact.

1. Make sure it's getting power...check fuse for cleanliness, then check with voltmeter for +12v @ fuse

2. Make sure there's +12v at switch; check hot lead at switch (ign on) with voltmeter; try all three speeds in case the speed resistor is bad (then it'll run only on high). Next turn heater on and check at the wire that runs into the heater box. If you have voltage there...

3. Pry plastic cover off end of heater motor (under steel plate in plenum chamber--open hood to access) and with the heater switched on, check for voltage at the motor brushes. One is hot, the other is ground, so you should have +12v at one brush. If you do and the motor issn't turning...

4. drip a couple of drops of oil (or a short blast of WD40) on the exposed end of the armature, then carefully stick a screwdriver down so that it'll reach the fan blades and try turning the fan. If the motor is stuck, that can sometimes free it. If it starts moving, keep encouraging it until it'll turn on its own. Then let it run for 5-10 minutes and drip some heavier oil (like 3 in 1) on the armature end and let it run some more. If this solves the problem, promise yourself that you'll run the blower motor regularly so it won't freeze up again. If you're unsuccessful...

You'll have to swap out the motor. Plenty of FAQs on that! Difficult, a PITA but not impossible if you're patient.

Hope you can revive vs replace it....it'll be something to be thankful for!
