Found an early '02 @ Pick & Pull that had a sort of odd

factory parts on it - vin 1565314, to all appearances originally Baikal blue (didn't think Baikal was used that early) with a dark brown interior (several shades darker than the tobacco tan/brown on my '70 Agave car) with wide non-headrest front seats and lighted rear side markers (had to have been added later, but it was a beautiful job - perfect holes in the quarters and proper factory wiring - maybe collision repair in the early 70's?). The vin plate also had "1968" stamped in very small letters at the right end of the "TYP" blank, and didn't show any signs of having been replaced.

As found, the floors were badly rusted, but it had 22 & 19 mm bars, Bilstein shocks & 13x6 BBS wheels on it. Still had the 1 bbl Solex and mechanical clutch linkage, too.

A previous owner had etched "Sherman Williams 085 9-84" across the bottom of the vin plate.

Baikal blue was indeed an early color--in '68 and 69, along with Polaris it was the only metallic available on the 2002s....

But it wouldn't have had a brown interior--esp that dark brown that was used on the 67 and some 68 cars. If the seats were full recliners, they were probably from a real early "68) 2002; 1600s didn't have reclining seats as a rule, and the 156 VIN indicates a 1600. The "1968" date stamped on the VIN plate was common on '68 model 1600s and 2002s--makes it kinda easy to tell the year! I have a VIN plate from an early 2002 (1660900) with the same date stamp on it.

And as you surmised, the lighted rear reflectors are a later addition. Nice find...wish we had pick 'n pulls in Ohio.

Mike

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
