THIS IS NOT JIMS FAULT!

My brother is the "enabler" here.  He and I had matching Yamaha RD250's back in our early twenties.  He lived in New England, I lived in Seattle.  He got a BMW K75s several years ago.  I got one today.  Of course, we still live on opposite coasts...he is in Seattle, I am in DC.  oh well.

I have been looking for a while, but finally pulled the trigger on this 94 K75s.  Will probably take it all apart this winter and refresh all the gaskets/hoses/brakes/etc.

and it is stored in the "den of sins" next to Jims 911....

Nice pickup, Marshall.  Looks mighty clean, and the color is right...   :P

Sadly, while I rode for many years, I haven't ridden since I sold my Interceptor right before I got my 02...  Still miss the 'freedom' two-wheels imparts.

Thanks Tom.   Color....LOL.....Black and silver are the two colors that appeal to me the least.  I was looking for a red, blue, purple or yellow one...anything but black or silver.  But, as we all know....when buying something old, condition rules.  ya get what ever color comes on the old vehicle in the best condition.   up side with a bike though...easy to just take off the painted parts and get'em repainted.  not going there though, the paint on this thing is in perfect shape.  metallic black it is!   :)

spent 3 hours today cleaning, waxing, vinylexing, and conditioning the thing.  then fixed the sticking ignition switch and fuel caps.

then rode the thing 4 miles around the hood....no license plate yet...can't go far.

And pulled the saddlebags.

I like the "M" stripe on the seat.

You are really lucky.  I ended up having to replace the switches on both sides of my R90.  The hardest part was putting all the lines back in the right spot on the board in side the headlight.

I also ended up removing the points from mine, and installing electronic ignition.  I still need to rebuild and tune the carbs.

Too many projects.

this thing needs a full efi tune up.  thankfully from the messing i have been doing with motronic bmw car EFI systems, the bosch k-jetronic on the bike is pretty simple.  TB's need balancing, new spark plugs(same part as on the S14), new TB gaskets, TPS adjusted, injector cleaning, new intake/crankcase breather hoses, etc.  it runs ok now, but will tear into it this winter.

Congrat's Marshall, stay safe on that. To come clean I'm looking at old air heads from the'50s and '60s to add to the collection.

  • 2 weeks later...

moved it to the shop for some maint..

20151101_120346.jpg

first up...spark plugs.  same plugs as an S14.

old ones not too bad, but had been in there a long time.  the caps that go into the wires were totally corroded.

20151101_120937.jpg

20151101_120943.jpg

noticed one of the reasons the idle may be off, cracked crankcase vent hose...unmetered air going into airbox.

20151101_132633.jpg

main airbox to manifold hose needs replacing also.

20151101_132648.jpg

on to the brakes...full fluid flush front and rear.  this had not been done in a while either.  no way to use a pressure bleeder, but you can squeeze the brake lever/pedal with one hand while working the bleed valve with the other.  ez.  Moto MC's sure don't push much fluid.

rear abs

20151101_134501.jpg

rear brake

20151101_135401.jpg

front MC on handlebar

20151101_142320.jpg

nasty old fluid

20151101_161820.jpg

then took the "barbacks" off.  these aftermarket devices move the handlebars up and back about an inch and a half for a more upright riding position.  not my style.

20151101_145434.jpg

done

20151101_151246.jpg

then i changed the final drive oil to redline 75w90 and the transmission oil to redline MTL.

everything is so small!  not used to working things other than cars.

i understand the need for motorcycle lifts now though.  even sitting on the floor it is a pain in the knees and back to work on this thing!

will get to the throttle body adjustment next.

:D

no alumablast was used in the maint process!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
