Should I put a two barrel Solex on a 1600-2?

I have an all original '67 1600-2 with 155,000 miles on it. I notice an offer of a 2 barrel solex and manifold on eBay and would like to know whether this would be a prudent modification. What change in performance might be expected? Anything else need to be done to adapt it?

Seriously, you haven't mentioned any other modifications to the engine. You may get some perfomance increase by going to the two-barrel intake manifold and the Weber 32/36 carb. I'd suggest upgrading your exhaust manifold too to one from a 2-liter engine. To maximize the benefit from both, you should pull the head and do a little port matching on the intake/exhaust side to smooth out the flow.

The 1600 manifold intake gaskets are round.

The two barrel 02 manifold intake has a larger, more rectangular shape, and it would not match well with your cylinder head's ports. It's more of a difference than port-matching with a grinder could make up.

Maybe you could find the euro E21 316 carbed intake?

Oh crap now Im sounding like a local mechanic that shall remain nameless.

Anyways, I ran a double barrle solex on my 2002. The motor was actually only a 1.8l, but hey, It ran great for the 2 weeks I got to drive the car. If you dont have the money for a new webber, find a good used solex.

Thanks for that advice. In fact the seller says the manifold is exactly that, a Euro. Still my question: would there be much of a difference, and also is the rest of the engine set up well for the change from 1 to 2 barrels? Thanks all for the responses so far.

choke. I messed with mine for months, trying to get both the fast idle and the choke butterflies to perform properly--coulnd't do it. When I found that the Solex choke assy was $87 new and a new manual choke Weber 32/36 was $97 (this was awhile ago) it was a no-brainer! If you don't need the choke due to climate, the Solexes can be made to work just fine--you'll have to re-jet for the smaller displacement 1600 engine, tho. Why not just fit a one-bbl Solex 40DST (the 1 bbl 2002 carb) to your 1600? That would be a lot easier...

Spend your money on a 1600ti or find an old JAM Engineering dual carb system that's made for the 1600. It will give much better results for less hassle getting it jetted in the long run.

I'm not an engine expert at all, but it doesn't sound like a good idea.

I don't think the air cleaner fits. Get the 2-barrel air cleaner, too. The brackets and hoses won't be the same, either.

I think it would mess up the drivability and be a major pain to get it jetted. With the manifold ports so badly matched to the head, it seems that you'd have a real hard time getting it to run well. The 2002 ports are larger than the 1600's, so it would be trying to cram a larger volume of air/fuel mix into a smaller opening. The carb is designed for the higher air flow of a larger engine. Lots of funny turbulent things will happen, gas may pool in the bottom of the manifold at times as well.
