How to check if differencial is LSD???

Can I check to see if a rear end is LSD by jacking up one tire and trying to spin???I might have found one at a Junk yard in a roundie and I jacked up one side and tried to spin it. It would not spin without turning the other wheel and almost knocking the car off the jack. The drive shaft is disconnected and there is no emergency brake hooked up. Also are BLUE

springs in the front some kind of after market ie sport??

driveshaft. If it is open the opposite wheel will spin in the opposite direction and won't necessarily move the driveshaft. If the car is in gear, the LSD won't spin (without trying really hard), the open will spin in opposite directions.

Don't know about the springs...HTH

When you spin one wheel the opposit wheel will spin in the opposit direction. If you remove the rear cover it should be clear if you have an LSD or not. There should also be an S on the out side of the casing

Wow! Was I ever happy to read that.

I'm working on a '73 that is suppose to have a 4.22:1 ratio/40% lockup differential. Once I began working on the car, I noticed right away that when I turned one of the rear wheels the other rear wheel turned in the opposite direction. I assumed that the previous owner had swapped the diff. and failed to mention it to me.

I'm removing a five-speed O.D. and driveshaft from a friend's 320i parts car tomorrow morning.... guess which 2002 will receive the overdrive.

If you have a 40% LS and with both wheels off the ground they spin opposite direction (like an open diff), then that LS is very, very worn out. It does not take much LS function to stop it turning like an open diff with this kind of test.

40% LS is more lockup than came in the typcical E21 donor (most often 25% LS), and those still take significant torque to overcome the pre-load. That means both wheels turn the same direction when off the ground in neutral.

Under these conditions (wheels off ground, trans in neutral) the preload on the LS diff clutches only has to be strong enough to turn the propshaft and spin the trans in neutral. I'm sure you know this is not a high torque, you can grab it with one hand and do it. It is more torque than required to walk the spider gears around inside the open diff, which is the only reason the wheels turn opposite.

I would say if the wheels don't turn the same direction it is not a LS diff.

be LSD. The clutch pack wears over time. My 25% LSD spins opposite directions when jacked/in neutral, but still limits spin under load (i.e. I see 2 black stripes when I hit the go pedal).

And the numbers are?

Figure out the corect brakaway torque in foot pounds and the weight of the car ,then we will be able to go around the corner with a whole lot throddle.
