Yes, it can be done, and no, it's not difficult. All you need is Weber pn 57804.333J. It bolts on in place of the original choke cover, then you just run a wire with a single spade connector from a switched power source to the electric choke. You'll have to loop or plug the water lines too, of course.

Electric seems simpler, but a water choke seems more accurate. For electric, the choke plate angle is mainly a function of how long the ignition has been switched on, eh? For water, the angle is mainly a function of engine temperature. Isn't engine temperature the most important factor?

Can anyone refute this?

be especially difficult to start if the car has been

running within the last hour. One trick which I

usually forget is to leave the switch open for a

minute of two and then go back to the car to get it

started, you can imagine, this is not used often...

The main contributor to needing more fuel (choke) for combustion is head temps- mainly the head itself, but also the intake, and the piston tops.

The head actually warms pretty fast (ask any aircooled VW owner) and combustion requirements drop to the 'warm engine' levels. However the block isn't up to temp yet, and the water is wayyyyy behind this. So you spend a long time in the 'warm engine, too much choke' state.

The electric choke is pretty sensitive to ambient temperature, so its 'open' time is related to how cold the head is when you start the car. Now, it can't compensate for driving conditions, but it gives a pretty reasonable (and quite short, surprisingly) choke application, then pulls the choke off. Unless you coast down a hill for 3 miles at the start of your drive, it'll work a lot better than the water choke.

Where the electric choke fails is in the '15 minute restart' where it's cold out, you run into a store for 15 minutes, then come back out and start the car. The electric (altho heated by engine heat) will give more choke than you really need- but only for a short time.
