Can be had for under $500, it's supposedly

straight and in decent shape vis-a-vis, rust.

However, major tranny issues....namely, no reverse.

Am I crazy to consider this one?

Pro's/Cons....any & all advice wanted.

Owned a bunch of E3s(13).... hopefully another one shortly. Is it Automatic? Check for all the same rust spots in an 02.. It is desired to have a later model cylinder head (82 and newer), older were prone to overheating and cracking due to insufficient coolant passages. I had a 72 head which was rebuilt and had no problems. Used heads can be had for about $100. 5, 6 and 7 series cars are great donor cars. check out the link for the Senior Six Registry. I bet you're talking about the one in central Oregon, right?

Anyway.. the 3.0si's are not very loved cars. Sure they are a decent ride and all...kind of big and wallowy in their own way. The BMW 2800 and the Bavaria are it's relatives and there seems to be a very small cult of die hard guys that hanker for them. I kind of like the style. I also own a project 2800 (I bought for $300 with a bad engine). Mechanically it's all pretty straight forward and is simiar to a 2002 in many respects (albet with 4 doors and a 3.0 liter 6).

Go get it. If you need an auto tranny I have several sitting..... for cheap. I'm only 1 hour from Portland, OR.

I have always liked those Senior Sixes. Should be a great car for just cruising along in stylish comfort.

The one in Redmond... Trans is 3hp22, usually reliable. Also readily available for not much $. Many parts interchange with e12 5er's. Early L-jet, no 02 sensor (doesn't run quite as well as the later verion). Don't think this would have the thermo-reactor exhaust, but not sure -- check that, because that's a head killer. Can be replaced easy enough with regular manifolds and downpipes.

Check out the link for more buyer-beware stuff. I disagree with the AT thoughts in this link, as I said, used AT's are pretty easy to come by and the 3hp22 is pretty reliable with normal maintenance. And swapping to a 4- or 5-speed is a pretty easy job (way easier than a 2002 5-speed swap).
