Which parts would you like to see BMW reproduce ?

Until (if ever) 02s get into the old P-car stratosphere, don't expect much. Just one example: Stoddard recently listed a new run of 356/912 steel wheels at $325 each. Would anyone here pay that for a Tii steel wheel? And then $xx for a new hubcap?

My final observation: the community that follows and supports the 2002 is very enthusiastic and loyal but from my experience they are quite frugal (notice I didn't say cheap) and are not hung up so much on originality as other marque followers. For example, everyone would like new dash boards but no one wants to pay $1500-$2000, which is what they would likely cost. Whew, I guess this thread brought out some pent up feelings, huh?

And well said, indeed! Building on Paul's comments (well, any post that ends in a "Grrr..." could probably be classed as a rant -- not intended as a criticism, Paul!), you rang all the right notes from my perspective:

 

1. If BMW is going to produce parts, they need to be done "right". If not, we're better off restoring old parts -- which are, quite honestly, plentiful and, quite honestly, cheap, when compared to other classic collector cars (e.g., Porsche)!

 

2. Values of '02s are still too modest to encourage the expenditure of big bucks (e.g., "Porsche bucks") by large numbers of owners. Maybe some day, but not today!

 

3. I couldn't agree more about the "frugality" of '02 owners -- to some extent, it does relate to point 2 above -- and I'm confident BMW discontinued the 1-piece dashboard because there were simply too few buyers at $1,300-$1,400 a pop!

 

One of our esteemed members came up with two NOS 3-piece dashboards. One sold quickly, the other is languishing. The price each was/is $2,000. If anyone here thinks BMW can produce 3-piece dashboards for less than $2,000, they're dreaming! Yet, over a period of several months, there was only demand for a single beautiful NOS dash at that price! So how many such new 3-piece dashes will BMW sell? One every 6 months? Well, from a business perspective and in my opinion, that product is a non-starter!

 

The item I consider the model of something that "worked" from the modern BMW re-pop perspective is the early OEM 5x13 alloy rim. It's been back in production for well over 10 years. I've seen the new ones mounted on '02s ranging from '68 to '76, so it appeals to a wide range of buyers, not a niche (of course, I'm not saying that I PERSONALLY would run such a rim on a pre-'71 or post-'73 car! ? ). The quality is excellent -- it's still cast by F.P.S., the original rim's manufacture. (I even bought a set for 2762757, even though I wanted an original set.) And the cost, thanks, no doubt, to the volume, has kept it affordable: $220-ish currently from the right sellers. Parts like this will work for BMW and work for us.

here is my vote:

steering box rebuild parts (gears)

dome light

electrial switches, blinkers, wipers, hazzards

 

 

oil pumps and fans for the heater boxes are avialbe, but the prices are crazy, not sure if that is a lack of supply...

See my list below for what BMW should produce for the BMW 2002.

 

  • Front/rear accordion bumper extenders
  • Flat capture nuts that attach to the door to attach the armrests
  • Capture nuts for the side mirrors
  • Black, angled button caps for the transmission seat belt bolt
  • Small plastic cover for rear wing windows where they attach to the C pillar
  • Inside, gray, hard plastic trim around doors and rear wing windows

I think but am not sure that MVP are doing Trunk lids and hoods soon, certainly trunk lids, may need to check on hoods?

I think they’re still available from BMW, Barrett, but they’re $836 each. I don’t see BMW looking to lower the price. Between the used market, injection rebuilding shops, and Paul Winterton’s cleaning, pintle-grinding, and pressure-testing, however, you can still assemble a clean tested set, fully to original spec, for well under the new price.

From this thread I'd thought that they were on back order - 

 

but that Black-Roc was making them: https://www.black-roc.com/kugelfischer-dlo-20d - but maybe I'm wrong about them making them. Paul does a great job and we exchanged notes as he developed his method. I have a pop tester, 18 injectors that I've bought at way less than anything close to list, and have done most of the work Paul does - I just don't have access to a vapor hone system (yet). That being said, I have several injectors of those 18 that are worthless, being corroded beyond where they can be brought up to a decent spray pattern and opening pressure.
