Dogleg Gearbox question

Hello, i bought a dissasembled gearbox that was guaranteed to be a five speed dogleg. I can't find any literature regarding the number engraved on the shell. Im attaching some pics of it, and would appreciate any help to clarify what gearbox is that.

cheers!!

if you are familiar with the appearance of the standard 4-speed 2002 transmission, then a true 2002 dogleg tranny should look exactly the same with the addition of an extra section approximately 3.5 to 4 inches long between the main casting and the end piece.  the clutch slave cylinder is the same configuration between the two.  if your slave cylinder appears like a 320i 5 speed tranny, then you do not have a 2002 dogleg.

The first 3 digits of the casting numbers will be 232.  The bell housing and rear cover of the 4 speed also used the same numbers.  If it is a real close ratio box there will be 3 sections to the case, they will all be marked 232------  Show us pictures of the case and if it is apart the main and counter shafts and we can probably tell you what it is.   That looks like it has been apart for a long time and is really "furry"  I hope they took care of the gears and internal pieces and they are all there and not just rusty unusable parts now.

This is true except the center section on the dogleg is only 3" long.

Hi Guys!!!! Wow, thanks for all the replys!

Ok, updates. If the dogleg was supposed to have 3 parts, like a sandwich, i just have 2. I certainly don't have the middle one.

Attached you will find a pic of the second part, that also begin with 232 number.

So basically i have the front and the last part, both with number 232.

Its just a 5 gear transmission?

Cheers!!!

If you don't have the "center" section you either have a 4 speed, OR a 5 speed with a MAJOR part of the case missing.  Show us a picture of all of the bits you have laid out and maybe we can see what you have.  Like I said before the "bell housing" (front section) of the case is the same for both the early 4 speed and the 235 (Close ratio or "dog leg") transmission so they both have the same casting numbers on them.  The rear covers are also the same between the 4 & 5 speed boxes.  The difference is the addition of the "center" section of the case and ALL OF THE INTERNAL PARTS.  The main shaft, counter shaft, shift shafts and all gears are unique to the Close ratio 5 speed.  I am assuming you bought this disassembled?

  • 4 years later...

Show us the clutch slave cylinder.  if it is in the standard location as the 2002 4 speed then it is a 235/5 gearbox.  If it is mounted up on the side of the transmission like any of the later transmissions then it is a 245/10

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
