That corresponds to a "2002 USA" model, the original one with smaller bumpers and no door bump strips (among other differences)

2572070-2593704 corresponds to the '71-2002 USA' model, which IS NOT just the 1971 model year. This includes all the 2002's with the larger chrome bumpers, and bump strips on the doors, from model years late 1971 to 1973.

Canada Matt's posts about rest repair. He had some great photos to show what you are going to get into. My 72 had only a "little" rust showing at the bottom of the drivers rear window and a dime size hole over the rt rear wheel arch. Let's see...hood, doors, both qtrs, rockers, trunk flr, back panel and both front floors. Other than that it was great, well, except the motor, radiator, brakes, trannie and diff. Now...it's great! Exercise extreme care!

It looks kind of like faded Golf. I've cleaned up the paint on part of the car and it shines up pretty well and looks good enough to leave alone for now. I did park it next to a Golf 02 and there is quite a bit of difference. According to some sources, Maisgelb was only used on 1600 cabs. The picture of the 1600 this month on the Bavarian tour calendar is the same color.

The guy I bought it from says his wife bought it new in Germany and brought it back. They lived in CO for a few years, then moved to CA. When they moved back to CO, they left the 02 with his sister. Eventually, she stopped driving it either because she had another car or it didn't start and it sat for about 6 months or so until I bought it. Came with CA blue plates and a title that seems to support his story. Overall, a solid car that needs some TLC.

I bought it to replace my first car, a '69 2002 (Florida w/ sunroof), and it will be a keeper. Originally, I was going to paint it Florida, but I really like this yellow. We'll just see where this project leads...

very, very, very, slightly more green, but blends in great with the reast of the car. Thx to Lance at Young's Auto Body who chopped a hunk out of the smashed hood to get the color match down.

1 Jan 1969. Unless modified, it has the two piston brake calipers, a long-neck diff, a two speed heater motor and several little detail differences from the later '69s. The "second series" '69s, assembled after 1 Jan 1969 had to meet new safety/emission standards so had some modifications. They began at 1664761.

FYI VIN tracking on the early 2002s is difficult, as the factory went by calendar year (Jan-Dec) while model years run Sept-Aug, so some extrapolating has to be done. I've done a bunch of research on 2002 VINs and have come up with a reasonable set of beginning and ending numbers for each model year...This was in a Roundel column several years ago.

Hmmmm.... I'm always suspicious of new and improved! j/k Please send me the formula when you have a chance. Do you know if BMW ever offered florida on the neue klasse cars? I've only heard of 02s and coupes in that color.

TIA,

Karl

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
