Sound deadening is so worth it

Just drove my 69 for the first time after completely deadening the car over the winter. I did the floor, firewall, rear bulkhead and doors with Fatmat and a new Esty carpet kit.. The car is so much quieter but even more than that, solid feeling,. All the little rattles are gone and it literally feels like a new 02. I remember this feeling the first time I drove my M2 car 6 years ago. If youre on the fence, do it. Yeah I added maybe 60lbs down low but who cares. This car is so slow anyway.

I love the stuff.  My method is to knock on the metal and add smallish pieces around until all ringing stops and it feels/sounds DEAD.  Sometimes this takes (relatively) big sheets but often you can just use pieces in certain spots where it needs it.  The result is a patchwork of it all over the car body.  The idea is to use less material but somehow I still go through multiple bulk packs.  I guess part of that is last time I did our black car (Korean car from Alabama), it has these crazy door panels with removable inner skin structures that carry the window/door mechanicals as a removable "module" behind the normal door panels that you see when you are sitting in the car.  Because I am feeding 125w to the midbasses mounted in those removable inner door panels I decided to deaden them like hell so I used a fair bit on each side of them and layering lots of it in the many crevices and hollows (it is molded plastic) to keep the speaker from moving the panel.  Also the normal door panel got a lot added to it as well.  Because the actual metal door skins are bonded to the side-impact bar and needed less on the remaining panel than I thought I might.  Don't get me started by the way... ;)

Was going to start a new thread but I'll hijack this instead...

I see a lot of threads with folks going to extremes to remove the factory sound deadening before they dynamat. Dry ice/air chisel/flame thrower/etc. Why not just paste the new stuff on top of old? Is it just to see "what lies beneath?"

Yes - to find/eliminate rust vs. sealing it in to have it get worse.

Another sound-deadening trick that's often overlooked:  Place chunks of either Styrofoam or flexible foam to fill most of the space under the back seat cushion.  Make it removable so you can check for rust, etc down there.  Filling that void does an amazing job of deadening road sound, and especially driveline and differential noise.  Price is right, too--just save foam packing.  You can even use foam peanuts security fastened inside trash bags--not very pretty but cheap, effective and invisible.

Good point .. I use cheap fiberfill from my wifes craft room inside trash bags . It costs me nothing and I just deny I know where it went. I put it behind the rear side panels in the cavities and under the seat like Mike explained

My car, with the dellortos, the ansa, and a 4.1 audio kit, is a loud mouthed brat.    Not sure if anything could make it anything less than a full-on aural attack.

yeah, i can relate. i just removed the sound system because...it was pointless.  can't hear it.  next step is to remove the deadener i put in because...it is just extra weight.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
