Exhaust Manifold stud/nut

I was not able to screw in the exhaust manifold stud all the way into cylinder head using my bare hands - A plier would damage the threads if I use it. Is there a trick that I can screw it in all way. One trick I thought about is to fasten a nut on one end of the stud and drill a small hole through the nut and stud and insert a pin through the nut/stud and use a wrench to screw it in then take off the pin and tighten up the exhaust manifold. It seems to be a lot of work but would there any easier way to do it?

Thanks.

BTW, I would use regular steel nuts, not the copper ones for this.

I would do that if I were you, just to make it go in there easily. Then use the 2 nuts against eachother trick.
