No vin tag in engine bay?

After inspecting the motor mounts on my poor 2002 I noticed that there was no VIN tag in the engine bay… Nor is there any holes where one would have gone IE rivets. It’s a 76’ Fjord.. Whats up with this? I have seen a few other 2002’s like this aswell.... There seems to be the paint code sticker covering it but there are no holes under it. *Confused slightly*

the holes were probably filled in during bodywork.

the vin number stamped into the passenger side inner wing

is the only legal marking on the car,and it must match

the vin on the title.

good luck

Several batches of U.S.-spec '76 cars did not get the metal riveted-on VIN plate on the right inner fender. We don't have an explanation why, but Les (username 02Les) knows the batch numbers and they're posted here somewhere, in an old thread.

My '76, VIN 2742541 (manufactured April 23, 1976), falls within one of these batches. It came with the distinctive '76-only tire pressure sticker where the metal VIN tag would have been applied. The first photo below is of my '76 in 1983, the earliest photo I have of this area. The second is of the car today: I'm missing the '76-only style of tire pressure sticker.

Steve

Well   To add confusion to the fire, my 76 Fjord does not have a riveted VIN plate either.   It is stamped in the usual place however.   No holes and I am 99% certain the engine bay had never had work done on it before I got it.  US spec car too!

So there is another big 02 mystery.   Late 76s????  Fjords????   haha

Hm.. That's what it like too. Tire pressure sticker and all. I'll post a picture here in a while. Rather odd. I wonder why they would do that.

I've always assumed they had supply issues with the metal riveted-on VIN tags. But since we're unlikely to ever discover further info, I just "file it away"!

My wife's '76 Automatic is VIN 2391904 and was mfg'd. March 17, 1976 and it has the VIN plate in the usual place, same as my '75. I guess it was after this that some came without VIN plates.Bob Napier

Bob,

I was looking, unsuccessfully, for the old thread where 02Les lists the batches of '76 VINs that came without the riveted-on tags. I seem to recall that there were 4 or so batches of VINs. It wasn't simply early or late cars: it was 4 or so discrete groups from various portions of the '76 model year. I'm hoping Les will see this current thread.

Steve

Based on other such "lapses" by the factory, I'll bet they ran out of VIN plates from their supplier.  BMW sure as heck wasn't gonna shut down the assembly line 'cause they ran out of VIN plates, so they said the German equivalent of "damn the torpedos, full speed ahead" and kept the line running until Hans showed up with his Lederhosen stuffed full of new VIN plates and they started attaching 'em again.

Apparently this happened several times in 1976 if there are discrete VIN runs that are missing plates.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
