Finally got my hands on one...

Hello Everyone,

My name is Adam, I am from Santa Barbara / Los Angeles. I recently purchased my 1972 BMW 2002 about 4 months ago. it popped up on craigslist for a price I could not pass up. I figured the rolling shell was worth what I was paying for a borderline running car.
Here is what I got.

FINALLY HOME!!! ( sitting next to my old daily... the car this replaced )

post-47672-0-86084400-1425069245_thumb.j

The car had 2 recaro seats from an E28 and a tore up rear seat and a nasty cracked Dash.

the owner said the car runs but needed a new guibo and that's it!!!

So i figured it needed EVERYTHING, with that in mind I went to see the car ( I called him 15 minutes after he posted it so I had first dibs ) surprisingly the car turned on and we drove it around the block, that was WAY more than I expected. I called a tow truck and it was mine.

I have done a lot since then, and I will add photos of what I have done, but this is how it sits today...

Then I got an E46 M3 and did some things...

Man that looks badass. I'd like to discuss your stance. What did you do to get it that low, and what sizes are your wheels?

Stage 1 - Tune Up. I rebuilt the Weber Carb, replaced the points and condensor, oild & filter, spark plugs, guibo, .

The right side lights were only working so I feared electrical gremlins.... it was a fuse. all the lights worked.

then I started having issues where this mickey moused accelerator situation kept snapping on me and leaving me stranded. On my wa home from Pomona swap meet I had to tie a shoe lace to my carb to get me home. So after 2 weeks of gathering parts I got that problem solved

IDK what the hell the last owner was trying to do here... so I got the OEM rod and made a braket to make it fit like everyone elses...

next issue, the car had an electric fuel pump which I had replaced with a new one and it kept taking a sh*t on me despite the "lifetime warranty" so another 2 weeks waiting for the OEM fuel pump, lifter, and mount spacer and I also hot tanked the fuel tank and replaced all the fuel lines. :D

In the mean time I replaced the front clip with one I found on craigslist. the front end was too banged up. I also found a dude that used to restore 2002's and I raided his basement for a short rear bumper and a flawless hood and some all red tail lights. once I got that all on, I decided to Primer the car so it was at least all one color so the LA snobs don't run me off the road.

Primered in my back yard! lol ( dont tell nobody!)

post-47672-0-19208600-1425069678_thumb.j

All the while I had ordered full coil over set up and ball joints as well as suspension bushings and tie rods that I ordered from IE all this was sitting in my closet while I got the car running more reliably ( BTW this is my daily driver )

I found some 15" BBS on ebay that were already re drilled to 4X100 for a decent price so I jumped on those. and a Moon Eyes Steering wheel from the pomona swap meet.

Before ( torn up stiff leather cheap a$$ steering wheel )

After ( until I get a Nardi )

post-47672-0-07019300-1425068784_thumb.j

I decided not to refinish the wheels until I have the car painted. I figured it would look ghetto fab with some bright polished wheels and no paint.

I've actually wanted to see a moon wheel on a 2002 for a while.  Looks like a neat turnaround project.  Will you be headed out to bimmerfest?

I think I'll be at Bimmerfest, I'm not sure, I'm kinda over seeing the same old crap every year, the community has changed since I first joined.

Thank you. I got IE coilovers I spoke with Jeremy. I pieced together a custom set up with Bilstein shocks and GC sleeve over kit up front ( weld on kit ) and the rear is an IE stage 2 spring with 1 coil cut out ( I think it's a front spring I am not sure ) the wheels are BBS RS 4X100 15X7 + 23

Nice work! Welcome.

Thank you!

Was your E30 a 318is or a 325?

Nice cars--my Dad had a '63 Impala "back in the day" with a 327/350 engine...That thing would scat!  Dated my (future) wife in it before I got my own car.

You did a great job on that '02--made a real silk purse out of that sow's ear!  Welcome to the fraternity/sorority

Ok thank you for that. Did you have to roll your fenders at all?

  • 2 weeks later...

Seems like you have raided to correct house!  So what made you end up with a 2002?  You have had pretty much every era of BMWs.  Was there just that "fun" factor missing?

Yea I need to go back with some more cash lol.

I really loved the E46 M3, probably my favorite of all, and I may get back into one. But with my E90, just to customize the car or modify the car in any way it cost you an arm and a leg, and I am way too hands on to leave the car stock, so it was killing me, plus I think. Maybe when I am a millionaire and I can spend big bucks on a track car I will get another V8 M3

Thanks man! the E30 was a 325 with an LSD out of an E30 M3. car flew!

The front fenders are hammered in ( cant really roll these because of the shape ) the rears I havent had to yet, but when I go wider in the rear I will need to hammer them as well.

Nice! Following the pattern your next car will be white Neue Klasse ;-)

Tommy

I am actually stuck on colors right now. I think the original Inka Orange would be cool but I am still looking at my options. it really depends on how the interior ends up...
