Time flies. On another sad note, I just heard that Jim Compeau, founder of 2002 AD, passed earlier this year.  I worked for him back in the early ‘90s, and a bigger hearted guy you’ll never meet.  I wish spare parts were available that could have kept him running like so many of the 02s he helped keep alive.

Sorry to hear about Jim passing away. I spent a lot of time in his junkyard in the early 90's when I moved to So Cal and before he sold 2002 AD. So what ever happened to the numerous tii's that Jim had acquired when he owned 2002AD? I heard from Leif Andenberg that he took numerous tii's to his retirement home in Oregon.

So sorry to have found this.  No idea what's what, but there's bankruptcy, civil suits, family issues, and a SWAT team involved.  Hoping to hear better news in the future.  Rob was an awesome individual when I knew him better years ago.  In 02s we trust.

Yikes that was about this time last year.  I hope he's ok.

Cool. Gonna see about putting a few bucks in Rob’s jailhouse account. Regarding Jim Compeau, he took a bunch of cars with him when he moved to Ashland, Oregon after selling AD.  I assume he restored a few of them, but his former partner, Rob intHout confirmed that all the 02 stuff was eventually disposed of.  The man was a legend. Originally from Iowa and a So Cal high school math teacher, he found his calling in 2002s, Shakespeare, and who knows what else. I hope I make as many friends as he did along the way.  RIP, old friend. We’re all heading you way!

I just tried that but he's already at his weekly limit.  Someone must be taking care of him.  According to the court calendar he is due to be sentenced tomorrow but it also says a pre-trial conference is scheduled which doesn't make sense if they are already sentencing him.

Already been a couple threads on this issue -_-

FYI, I followed up on some info about Rob and his unfortunate situation. I lost a QR steering box but others lost more. C'est la vie or shikata ga nai. Sad to learn about everything that happened, I had many great conversations with him.

I know at least several of them made their way to a well-known collector (ie they are in good hands).

Inhout still has quite the collection stemming from his AD co-ownership.

Driving out to Sun Valley to 2002AD to visit Jim, buy a few parts and shoot the breeze with him and the other customers.  What a great way to spend part of many Saturdays back in the 1990's.  Sad to hear he is gone.

And I sure hope Rob Torres gets the help he needs. Those 2002fest Wests were a great time.

+1

My ‘73 tii is one of those cars (i.e., a “Jim Compeau car”). It needs re-painting (back to its original Inka) but it is a very solid, very low rust, and complete California car. I’m very happy The Collector “de-accessioned” mine!

Steve

Rob was amazing to deal with.  He even sent me stuff for free sometimes.  He was definitely one of the 'good guys' in the 2002 community.  I was sad to hear he closed shop, and now this.  ouch.

Regarding Jim at 2002ad though... my buddy dropped a car there to get a new interior and never really checked on it, and they never called him.  About 9 months go by, he checks, and nothing was done to it (he had a premature kid, and lots of family drama so the car wasn't a priority).  He finally goes to check in on it after his life settled, and pay for it, and 2002AD changed hands, and his car was gone.  It was lein sold (illegally because my buddy was never contacted about it) in OR and sent to the midwest somewhere. Sounds like that was one of the cars Jim took with him... Not cool.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
