silly head/piston question

the head in my 72 '02 has been rebuilt/replaced (not the original item) and put on the original block. I've been told that the US-spec 72 was delivered with either a 121 or an e12 head (121 pistons will fit either, but e12 won't fit the 121 head, right?). I've also been told that the 121 was only put on the 2002 tii. Can I tell what the original head was (e.g by VIN) without opening her up and looking at pistons?

I don't have MaCartney handy, but I thin '72 predates the e12. Here's my recollection.

The 121 can take flattop pistons or 'bathtub' pistons. The e12 can take flattop pistons or 'grand piano' pistons. Grand pianos will last about 3 revs in a 121, bathtubs will last about 3 revs in an e12. So you probably have flattops, if you have an e12. The marking, e12 or 121, is on the intake side.

Both 121 and e12 were used on carbed and tii models, AFAIK, depending on year.
