Alternator wiring

Hi everyone,

I have a 75 2002 with the stock alternator, at some point someone has cut the plug off, and now there are the three wires with individual connectors. One wire is blue and the other two look brown, so I'm not sure which one goes where. I hope that all makes sense.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes pics would help so we can determine which alternator you have.  If its a newer more powerful AL116x from an e21 then Esty is correct only the blue wire is needed from those, which is why the harness was cut.  If its not, I would look into that upgrade as its a bolt in and gives you more electrical power if needed.

This might help...

D+ Blue

DF Black

D- Brown

You might go further up the wires to see which color the 'brown' wires actually are. One should be black.

I have an al116x alternator in my '73 and am confused as to what extra modification is needed in the wiring schematic. I recognize the B+ main power terminal and alt cover ground wire, but what else needs to be connected to this alternator? Electrical problems have been haunting me ever since I installed this model and I can't find any helpful data anywhere..

Thx, Scott

You need to connect the blue D+ wire in the 2002 harness to the alternator D+. The other two wires are not used. They are for the external voltage regulator that was original on the car. You can also remove the external voltage regulator from the fender. With your new alternator you will not need it.
