Carb or tuning help Milwaukee area

Looking for help getting this engine to run well. Rebuilt the Italian webers, jetted per 02 faq advice, synchronized and center pull throttle, timed to the flywheel ball, has a tii mech. distributor - still back fires when the revs are held at a few thousand. Will gladly pay someone who can help get this thing to run well. Milwaukee, Wi. area (Racine)

Are you using a pressure regulator?

How is the idle?

Try setting the maximum timing rather than the ball. This has been discussed before. Max advance should be 33 to 36 deg, at about 3000rpm. I marked 33 deg on front pulley where I could see it better. Or use electronic timing light.I screwed around with carbs for some time before following IE advice to get enough timing advance.

+1 on the timing advice

You're not running nearly enough advance.

I was running the Tii dizzy at 33 degrees at 2000 rpm (using flat top pistons)  Anything less than that and my engine ran poorly.  ( yes, 33 @ 2000...your mileage may vary )

So...forget the timing ball, find the TDC mark on the flywheel and use an advance-able timing light to set your timing and watch for signs of detonation.

lots of info here  http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/141041-dcoe-advance-ignition/

What are the idle jets you are using?  It backfires when revving in neutral?  What about when driving?
