Perhaps in defense of your point, grade 2+ 912s have been regularly selling in the 60s for nearly the past year, generally following the lift in the 911 market.

I don't wanna Hijack this towards 912 valuations, I just used it as a comparable car example...  I have 2x 912s in great to excellent condition but not concours, 100% rust free, yet I don't think they are worth anywhere near that. I guess that depends on the interpretation of 2+ - lots of leeway there...

And my 73 (EFI) will annihilate both in most metrics ;-) It's more powerful, roomier, more economical, cheaper to fix, makes people smiler more... " About time the 2002 went up"  is all I'm saying ;-)

The market disagrees with your perception of 912 values, lately. There's plenty of discussion on other forums - anything better than a driver is no longer a 30K car.

On topic, I completely agree with "about time." Only more time will show us whether these values are sustained, or simply short-term effects.

I guess that eliminates my car from the "most valuable example" category. I have the common dent on top of the air cleaner and the "how did that get there" dent on the radiator top tank. These happened in the 17 years prior to my purchase of the car. I've learned to accept them as battle scars administered by slovenly mechanics and DIY hacks...

....I still want to know what that SportsCarDigest car sold for.

Ditto, ditto ('73), ditto ('73 and '76), ditto (41 years prior for '73 and during MY ownership for '76 - oops!), ditto...

And ditto!

It seems to me that tii airboxes, even more so than the carburetor airboxes, have led generally miserable lives! I envision frustrated mechanics banging these things with a socket wrench, saying, "D**n fuel injection!" The upper flange/leading edge of the firewall/air plenum seems to be yet another common target of slovenly mechanics and DIY hacks... I've seen some beauties recently!

Regards,

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
