@Sons of Marty - yes, my car is a 1974 model.  It is supposed to trigger the red "brake" warning light on the dash.  Where I live, we have safety inspections before I can licence the car.  I was told that as of 1971, cars in North America are to have this warning system.

Ok remove the boot on the parking brake handle and you'll see a flimsy bracket that holds a plunger switch, try working the switch by hand if you get the light bend the bracket until  you get the light to come on when the p/brake is on and it goes off when off.

The problem with my car is the wire that should be connected at the parking brake is missing.   I think the switch on the parking brake is working fine. I need to run a new wire from the parking brake to somewhere. But to where?

The top one is in color, which is nice.  The hand brake switch is number 72, up towards the right hand corner.  It will be the same in your '74.

I've seen the wire under the carpet along the driver's side of the transmission tunnel.

Thanks for the help, especially the wiring diagram. 
To fix my problem, I did the following:

On the brake fluid reservoir, there are 3 wires going to 2 connectors. Identify the single wire and trace it through the firewall. 

On the back of the instrument panel, there is a round connector with 12 pins.   The wire from the reservoir goes to pin #5. 

I cut this wire and soldered in a new wire running to the parking brake switch. I cut the wire in a place where I could solder easily. 
Now, either the parking brake or a low brake fluid situation will trigger the “BRAKE” light to illuminate. 
 

I hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.
