As for trying to raise parts / funding for local Baltimore 02 owner after flood - forget it.

Obviously:

a) if he can afford to restore a car THIS nice once - he can do it again

B) obviously I'm somehow going to make more than my usual $8.40 per hour working on it versus Triumph brake jobs

c) surely he knew the Chesapeake would travel 4 blocks inland into the city of Baltimore during the hurricane

it's only a car

fuck it.

Don't take things so hard man if an earthquake hit and jacked up my rides I would not expect you dudes to help pay for the damage.. If the guy needs support I am sure he will get it from his local car buddies, etc. IMO he messed up should have driven his stuff WAY out of the area on first warning of impeding storm ...at least you dudes have forwarning ;) Just tell him to spray it out real good and stop crying and drive before winter hits! Regards, -A

I felt I got a bit flamed on another board - and just took it too personally.

money is a funny thing

I'll be donating a few afterhours here and there - as my own way of helping out. 02s are just in my nature.

There are lots of folks on this board who will help out with reasonable/cheap parts for anybody who is a 2002 enthusiast. Have him use a name like DasBoat02 and explain who he is. Hell...I'll give him 66% off of e-bay prices for anything I have that he could use (which probably ain't much).

There are many ways to help out one who is in need.

personally, i'd be inclined to help anyone on this board, or anyone that i've met personally in 02ing.

(don't bother asking for free hotrod parts rajesh)... : )

just my 02cents worth

I know you as well as I have a soft spot for these cars paul and it's normal for someone who looks at things how do you say... materialistically... like objects... to say "piss off.. he was an idiot for leaving it that close to the hurricane".. then they're owners like us who don't consider ourselves owners but more like curators or partners of a unique machine for a short time.. owners who cherish..... the cars become something of a mistriss of the night or a soulmate or more than a close friend... how you classify that bond between you and your car is something of your own but when a car is a labor of love for an individual it's a shame to see one destroyed... I would be willing to help with any parts you might need as I have quite a surplus laying around here... it is common to call a man an idiot for leaving it behind... it is exceptional to help with no thought of reward.. party on

but some god points have been made and it can be frustrating putting together a rescue for a person who might not be so indigent. anyway- i feel like the like the others on the Board who are genuine good guys, and who want all 02s to survive: have the guy let us know if he cannot find some part, or whatnot and i will lok at my spares and see what i can send to help. he should also aggressively pursue the total coverage insurance thing that has been covered here ad nauseum. want to see the car back together, dont want to see paul get frustrated. let the owner take the ball now and contact thebaord with his situation and needs. you did more than most would- time to relax . best to you emily and bride.

plenty of great thoughts were brought up by Paul even posting that...

lots of food for thought generated ...

ahh, the true power of the internet (no it's not porn).

i'm inclined to help folks, i'm also cheap/broke most of the time, so i'm more inclined to save my helpin for friends that i know (either thru the board or local).

Don't let the recent traffic deter you from who you are.

I don't know the guy, but since it is a FOAF, I would be somewhat inclined to see what items I could spare for someone in need. If it were a local FAQ member or even family(Ratt), I would be more inclined to just box up what ever I had and ship it out to them-gratis.

You are a giving person, Paul. Hang on to that. Especially if you have any belief in Karma.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
